It felt like something of a walk of embarrassment as I walked into the kitchen where Lucien, Alice, and Raven were all talking through cups of tea and coffee.
"There she is," Raven drawled smoothly as she drew everyone's attention to me as I slunk into the room, running my fingers nervously through my hair that was still wet from my shower.
Lucien raised his mug into the air with a laugh. "There she is. Demi's girl, I hear?"
I flushed even harder and said with a clear voice. "Where's Demetrius?"
Lucien laughed again and Alice's eyes flashed.
"He's outback, but here," he said pushing a full mug towards me. "This'll help with the headache."
I nodded in thanks and drank some of the hot tea and felt relief flood through me, my headache evaporating successfully with warmth spreading like a soft caress all through my chest.
"So, did you like the little setup downstairs?" Lucien said, green eyes sparkling at me from over top his coffee cup.
I shrugged my mind still a bit messy, trying not to let my mind wander over last night's awkward misgivings. "Yeah, I guess."
He grinned as if he were about to spit out another joke, but Alice interrupted. "We were going to go out again, to scout for any angels flying nearby. I was a little worried from the Capital guards that almost caught us last time. They flew pretty close. You wouldn't mind joining us would you?"
"No," I said quickly draining more of the easing tea. "I would love to."
"Great," Alice beamed. "Well, just collect Demetrius and we'll be set to go."
Lucien and Raven both sniggered behind their mugs, laughing at a joke both Alice and I weren't informed about.
"God you two," Alice said shaking his head. "Drop it. You're like three year olds."
I smiled thankfully to Alice as I set my mug down on the counter. "Thanks Alice."
I set off to go find Demetrius.
The sun hung heavily, burning the sky into a deep caramel, preparing for the approaching night.
I walked through the open field out behind the mansion, dry grass reaching up to my waist and scratchy weeds, brushing my legs. I breathed in lungful of fresh air that felt just as refreshing as a goodnight's sleep.
As I walked, I craned my neck and gazed up into the sky, searching for Demetrius who was supposed to be flying around somewhere I imagined, but the sky was blank of any flying creature. I felt myself smile just thinking of Demetrius again, remembering his scent, his eyes, his lips. He didn't seem like that type to keep girls around for more than one night, but I wonder if that would change.
If it would change for me.
My mind broke from wandering over precious recent moments at the sound of wing beats, a shadow passing over my head and landed the tall grass behind me. I whirled around, trying to get a view of what moved through the thick grass. My stomach twitched eagerly, padding slowly forward, my gaze narrowing as I saw the grass part as the figure moved.
"Demetrius?" I called, but the figure didn't reply.
I frowned, the hairs on my arm rising slightly, my hand hovering over the hilt of my blade at my pocket. Suddenly, the grass flew apart the figure lunging, pinning me to the ground faster than I could even breathe. My hand flew down to my side, wrenching my blade from my pocket and tossed his weight of me, pinning him against the ground, forcing the dagger against his throat.
