I sheathed my blade and glared down at him, holding back the urge to use it. "Thor, what are you doing here? It's after curfew. I thought you might've been a wraith!"
He looked over my shoulder to Enrique with a brief flash of, 'help me' crossing his face as I got off of him, letting him get to a standing position. He'd only got the chance to open his mouth before a series of thundering explosions of light and sound shot around us. I screamed and tore out my blade again as I faced the rocketing lights that flew up into the sky.
Suddenly, angels flooded the streets and lights came on, all of them encircling us with broad smiles all dressed in party clothes.
"SURPRISE!"
I stood there with blood pounding through my ears and my body frozen in fear and confusion. Enrique moved up beside me with a broadening smile and clapped me on the shoulders.
"Surprise, Lilith."
I turned and gawked at him, my hand holding the blade trembled. "W-what? Enrique, what is this?"
Enrique looped his arm around my shoulder and turning back to everyone. "I've been planning this for a little while. Remember that little talk we had about our future?"
I stared at him wordless and still fuming, still half expecting a demon to come jumping out in front of us.
"Well, don't you think it's about time we had an engagement party?" he said beaming brightly, squeezing my hand.
I looked past him to all the happy faces, within the crowd. I picked Thor and Gwen out almost instantly, they stood holding little lights in their palms.
"Engagement party?" I said through clenched teeth, my hand still gripping my blade furiously. "Enrique, do you think this is hardly the time?" I still hadn't gotten over my hostility.
He didn't even seem to notice the tightness in my voice. "I thought it would be best for us and the city to have a little...celebration to take their minds off things. This'll put the deaths behind us helping us to move on. The Council has everything under control, and with all that weight off our shoulders, I'd say we started to rejoice instead of mourn." He touched my cheek soothingly. "There are better things to be happy for."
I again turned back to the crowd as they began to disperse, and mingled amongst themselves. Swallowing my rage-too tired to argue or punch anybody in the face, I sheathed my blade back into my waistband and looked up to Enrique's hopeful stare.
"I guess you're right," I sighed honestly. "We need to take a break and focus on the positive." I swallowed down a throat-full of bile, "Us."
Enrique grinned his eyes sparkling. "That's what tonight is all about."
I smirked and looked down to my poor attire that looked out of place and glum next to everyone else, even in a white dress shirt and a leather vest with dark pants, Enrique didn't look totally uncouth.
