Staying in the hospital turned out to be far less confining and monotonous than Junkyu had expected. Surprisingly, it was quite the opposite. His days were filled with a flurry of familiar faces and warm interactions that reminded him of his time working there.
In the first week of his stay, Junkyu's private suite unofficially became a second staff room for ER nurses and personnel. They popped in during breaks to chat, catch up, or share updates about life. Mashiho, despite being in the late stages of his pregnancy, was still actively working in the ER and often lingered longer than the others, cherishing the opportunity to reconnect.
Everyone missed Junkyu's steady presence. His sudden departure from the chaotic ER left a noticeable void. While he had always been reserved, especially after Haruto's death, his reliability and skill in managing difficult patients were unmatched. They admired him deeply and hoped he might one day return. Not because they wanted easier shifts, but because they felt his talent and dedication were too extraordinary to go to waste.
JeongWoo listened to their stories and praises with quiet pride. Though he preferred the idea of Junkyu being a stay-at-home husband, he wouldn't stand in his mate's way if he ever decided to work again. Whatever Junkyu chose, he would have JeongWoo's unwavering support.
By the second week, Junkyu had fallen into a comfortable routine. Each morning began with the nurse-in-charge checking his vitals and the dietary staff delivering his breakfast. After eating, he would shower and prepare for his session with a pregnancy exercise specialist. During this time, one or two of his former colleagues would often stop by to say hi, a nostalgic reminder of his past morning shifts.
Dr. Yoshi visited every other afternoon. Sometimes he came with his nurse, sometimes with resident doctors in training. On other occasions, Dr. Jaehyuk would tag along, though his visits often seemed more for his own amusement than professional necessity.
In fact, Junkyu saw Dr. Jaehyuk so frequently that even JeongWoo began to question his schedule.
"Don't you have patients to attend to or surgeries to perform?" JeongWoo asked one afternoon, lowering down the work paper he was reading, glaring at the surgeon sprawled on the sofa. Dr. Jaehyuk had made himself at home, his feet—still clad in rubber shoes—propped on the armrest, his white coat tossed carelessly over the coffee table.
"Ssshhh," Dr. Jaehyuk shushed him without moving. "I just finished a six-hour CABG surgery. I deserve this rest."
"Triple bypass?" Junkyu asked curiously from his bed, lowering the parenting book he'd been reading.
"Quadruple." Dr. Jaehyuk stated matter-of-factly. "One from the saphenous vein, two from radial arteries, and one from the mammary artery."
Junkyu raised an eyebrow. "I thought you weren't doing cardiothoracic surgeries anymore."
The doctor shrugged. "Gotta do what I gotta do."
"Then you gotta rest where you gotta to rest—your office," JeongWoo interjected, his annoyance clear.
With a grin, Dr. Jaehyuk countered, "But this VVIP suite is so much nicer. The sofa here is way comfier than my office couch."
Junkyu chuckled softly, unable to argue. He recalled how disorganized Dr. Jaehyuk's office could be, and he had to admit that the VVIP suite was a far more inviting space. The room was the epitome of luxury, easily four times the size of a standard hospital room. It featured a plush seating area with a four-seater sofa, a massage chair, a smart TV, and even a tablet for added convenience. A dining table for four and a kitchenette equipped with a large refrigerator, water dispenser, microwave, coffee maker, tea set, and complete dinnerware completed the space. On the other side of the room was a high-tech patient bed and a large single bed for the patient's family. There was no partition in between the two beds, only a curtain that could be drawn around the patient's whenever they need privacy. The en-suite bathroom, stocked with high-end toiletries, bathrobes, and a hairdryer, made Junkyu felt like he was staying at a five-star hotel instead of a hospital.
