Thursday before winter break, Thalia and I got an Iris message from Thalia's sister who is also my crush. Gods, that sounds stupid. Scratch that.
An Iris message from my best friend, Vic, on the Iris message she had told us she got an Iris message from our friend Grover, a satyr. Grover had told Vic that he needed help in the boarding school he was. Vic told the message to Thalia and I, since we were in the same all girls boarding school on New York, then Thalia Iris messaged Percy to tell him, they yelled and stuff.
The usual Percy and Thalia conversation.
So next day, Percy's mom picked Thalia and I from our school and Vic from camp, and let me tell you something. From the very moment we picked her up she greeted me like usual, then it was like someone had thrown her freezing water, like her worst fears had come true and started avoiding me. She sat next to Percy and kept looking out at the window.
Vic and I hadn't seen each other in person since summer and the very first thing she does is avoid me and sits besides Percy. Which was like a punch to the gut. Percy. The same Percy that was with her for whole afternoons. That Percy. And the worst thing was that Vic had that dark blue coat.
Now, you might think what's wrong with that, Annabeth? Everything. Because stupid shortie Percy had given her that coat for her birthday back in September. And now, he had a smirk on his face, I was sure he was teasing her about something, but I couldn't tell what.
I must've been way too obvious because Thalia leaned closer and whispered. "You're glaring at him, think positive."
Thalia was right. Also, Thalia knew about my crush on Vic and everything, because one- she was at camp Half-Blood for the summer and two- because she's not an idiot and caught me staring at Vic while they were in an Iris message.
I mean, besides the Percy thing, things were nice I mean, Vic had her dark wavy hair down, which was a rare, but really enjoyable sight and her blue eyes always seemed more blue-ish on winter and even though Percy got her that coat, it really did fit her. But anyways it was an eight-hour (and she still didn't say a word to me!) drive from New York to Bar Harbor, Maine. Sleet and snow pounded the highway.
Nor Thalia or me had seen Percy in months, but between the blizzard and the thought of what we were about to do, we were too nervous to talk much. Except for ms. Jackson, By the time we finally got to Westover Hall, it was getting dark, and she'd told us every embarrassing baby story about Percy there was to tell. I almost felt bad about him. Almost.
Thalia wiped the fog off the car window and peered outside. "Oh, yeah. This'll be fun."
Westover Hall looked like an evil knight's castle. It was all black stone, with towers and slit windows and a big set of wooden double doors. It stood on a snowy cliff overlooking this big frosty forest on one side and the grey churning ocean on the other. Despite it looking like Dracula's castle, it had a good desing.
"Are you sure you don't want me to wait?" ms. Jackson asked.
"No, thanks, Mom," Percy said. "I don't know how long it will take. We'll be okay."
"But how will you get back? I'm worried, Percy."
Percy blushed, which I took as a sign to step in. "It's okay, Ms Jackson." I smiled reassuringly. My blonde hair wastucked into a ski cap. "We'll keep him out of trouble."
Ms. Jackson seemed to relax a little. Vic once said ms. Jackson had told her she thinks I'm the most levelheaded demigod ever to hit eighth grade.
"All right, dears," the woman said. "Do you have everything you need?"
