I was gonna kill Perseus Jackson and send him to Tartarus. That stupid New Yorker. He ruined my date with Annabeth! And then, I was stuck in a taxi with another girl's number written with permanent black marker on my hand. Perfect.
But I thought my day could still be saved. I gave Annabeth the window sit and sat on the middle of her and Percy.
I tried to lighten the mood with a few jokes, but Annabeth didn't even react. Then I asked some questions about anything that came into my mind. Only a few 'hmm's, I also tried to ask questions about architecture. About the Gateaway Arch, the Parthenon, Fallingwater, Eifel Tower, Colosseum, Palace of Versailles. Anything. Annabeth didn't answer any other words more than 'yes' and 'no.'
I glared at Percy. He mouthed "sorry, thought it was next week."
An idea popped in my mind. "Percy."
"Yeah?" He said, though he looked worried, as if I might smack him in any moment.
"Do you have a paper?" I asked. "So you can write Ra– the mortal's number down. Because I won't call her. You will."
Percy had the nerve, the audacity to smile. "You won't call her?"
I glared at him some more. "Of course not. I don't know her at all, why would I call her? Besides, if she was at your school, then you'll be classmates. You should get to know her. I prob– I won't see her ever again. Also, I won't walk around with number written down on my hand."
"Huh. Well, I don't have a paper." Percy told me.
"And Riptide?" I asked.
"Of course I have Riptide, I don't go anywhere without it."
"Then get the pen out and write the number on your hand."
"What? I can't! I don't use Riptide to write, you know that, Vic."
"Well, go figure how to then, because–"
"You're making a big deal outta nothing, Avery." Annabeth spoke up.
"No," I said. "I don't wanna call Rachel. I don't wanna call any random girl now. Percy owes an explanation to her. Not me."
Annabeth glared at me. "Do what you want." Then she stared back at the window.
I tried to wipe the number off my hand, but nothing would work. That marker was about as permanent as the ink of a tattoo. I might've spend too much time trying to wipe it off. During that, I thought about anything I could do so Annabeth wouldn't be mad at me.
I glanced at her. Would compliments work? I had feeling not. I had to be original on this. Something she didn't know already.
"You're wearing the bracelet I gave you." I began.
It had been my gift to her for Christmas, I remember rushing to Cabin Nine, pleading Beckendorf to change the flower engraved on it. At first, it was gonna be a sunflower, which meant friendship. Right after Annabeth left, I knew I couldn't give her a bracelet with a flower that literally meant friendship. Not right after I realized I had this massive crush on her. So instead, the bracelet has engraved an Iris flower, which means wisdom, hope and courage. But on the romantic side, it means deep, sincere love along with loyalty and trust.
