Lauren sits at a red light, everything that happened today finally sinking in. Camila had hugged her, and smiled at her countless times, and they messed around today like they'd known each other for years. Lauren had no idea what was going on. Did she like her? Was she just being friendly? And what was going on in that house? A locked door, the bruises, the holes... She doesn't have much time to think, as the light had turned green. She feels like she has butterflies in her stomach. That feeling was tending to come up a lot lately whenever Camila was around her. And she wasn't sure what to do about it.
--
The next day at school, Camila was at her locker after fifth hour. She was keeping to herself, too busy going through her things to notice the girls walk up to her.
"So, Camila, you've turned lesbian now, huh?" Stacy asks.
Camila looks up at her slowly.
"We saw you at the park yesterday. What, are you and Jauregui a thing now?" she asks, laughing bitterly.
Camila ignores her and continues stuffing her bag with her homework early.
"Aw, I'm sorry, did I offend you?" Stacy asks her, feigning sympathy.
"Careful. It looks like Jauregui did have the gay virus. Don't get too close, she's got it now," a brunette says, laughing.
While this went on, Lauren was walking back to her locker. She hadn't seen any of the cheerleaders since this morning, so either they were too busy with someone else to confront her or they were all gone. As she turns the corner, she hears the laughing again, but they're all crowding someone who was bending down at their locker. Lauren continues to her locker, putting her books away before she hears them mention her last name. Lauren turns to look at them, and almost punches the locker when she sees who they're talking to.
Camila looked terrified and angry at the same time, and they had her completely surrounded.
Lauren slams her locker shut, causing them to look at her. "Leave her the fuck alone!" Lauren says to Stacy angrily.
Stacy looks scared for a moment before she smirks. "And what're you gonna do if I don't?" she asks, taking an intimidating step towards her.
The other cheerleaders smirk and cross their arms. Camila's eyes widen, but she doesn't leave.
"You really wanna know what I'd do to you if you bother one of my friends?" Lauren growls, taking a step towards her.
Stacy looks shocked by her answer, taking a step back this time.
"You think you can just get away with this bullshit?" Lauren continues when Stacy doesn't reply. "You know what, Stacy? I honestly don't give a fuck if I beat the shit out of you and get suspended. You'd deserve it because you are such a bitch to everyone and you think you can just get away with anything. News flash, Barbie, nobody gives a single flying FUCK what you have to say about them, because we all know you are a cold hearted she-devil with no feelings whatsoever, and you and your pathetic little posse don't intimidate anyone. So go take yourself and your little close-minded, homophobic friends somewhere else, and don't come near me or Camila or any of my friends again," she says, glaring at her and practically shaking with anger.
Stacy looks hurt at what she has to say, and normally, Lauren would feel bad. If it was someone else. Stacy had tortured her since sixth grade and she was tired of it. Stacy blinks a few times before scoffing.
"Whatever. We're out of here," Stacy says before she and her friends walk towards the exit, apparently skipping last period. Lauren turns back to Camila, who is looking up at her in pure shock mixed with fear.
"Are you okay?" Lauren asks her softly, holding out her hand to help her to her feet.
Camila flinches as her hand nears her, but relaxes when she realizes not everyone takes their anger out on her, like her father.
"Wow. That was intense. I didn't know you had it in you, Jauregui," Camila says, laughing nervously.
"Like you said yesterday: nobody deserves to be treated like that. Especially you," Lauren says, smiling softly.
"Ms. Jauregui, come with me," a deep British voice says from behind them.
They both look at each other in fear before Lauren turns to see Mr. Cowell standing there with his arms crossed, apparently seeing the whole thing. Lauren walks over to him hesitantly, glancing back at Camila one last time before turning out of sight.
"Shit," Camila whispers worriedly, hurrying to class with her mind occupied with Lauren.
