I've come to terms that majority of the time, nothing goes my way.
Let's take today for an example. It's a special day today. Do I know what the special day is or why it's a special day? No, of course not.
All I know is that it's a gathering held by my mom and Aunt Nora at the Larsens' and their friends are invited.
Some other guests came over too, to visit in the afternoon. Aunt Nora told me to be as welcoming as possible while they sip their tea.
She told me specifically that they are not her friends but just came over for a visit.
I sneak another side glance from the couch I'm sitting on at Noah's arm in a brace that he seems to have adjusted well with seeing that he's helping mom with the cooking.I hate the way my heart warms at the sight.
He looks fine. He's better now. Not the pale, silent Noah I saw at the hospital last week. Not the one I thought I would lose forever.
That still doesn't make the worry go fully away.
I don't care, I remind myself.
My shoulders are stiff as I try to make myself look calm and smile politely. I hate the way I'm so uncomfortable around people I don't know.
I'm itching to scratch my skin out because of the way they're looking at me up and down, judging what I'm wearing.
Did I mention that these people are grade-A mean girls?
I hate how it actually bothers me. I hate that I can't be normal and actually start a proper conversation.
Where's Audrey? She's usually the one to be here in my place. She's good at all of this and they like her.
Luckily for me, though, they're all busy boasting about their childrens' achievement and trying to one-up the other.
I move my gaze around the place to find anything interesting to put my focus on, because getting up to hang out with my sister or Isa isn't a very polite thing to do.
I see Audrey laughing with Nico by her side as they both help Aunt Nora set the table. I try to telepathically make her find me looking at her so I can do the 'help me' sign, but that idiot's brain isn't as advanced as mine yet.
I think the 'aunties?' see her with Nico too, because one of them laughs fakely as she looks at me.
"Your sister and her boyfriend seem to be doing well." She tells me and I have no idea what to say to that. "How's that going for you, honey?"
In other words: when are you getting a boyfriend?
I shift in discomfort. Why is this even a conversation? "Um, n-"
I get cut off, "Now, Danielle," the other lady gives a look to the one who asked me that question and then gives me a pitiful smile. "You know that it's probably hard for her to find a guy to stick around." She says condescendingly, looking at me while saying that.
