Don't show any reaction.
Don't. No matter how much you want to do the opposite.
Don't act like this isn't the most someone has ever done for you.
Don't.
But for some very, very disturbing reason, I have the urge to grin as something on Noah's plain black, boring backpack catches my eye.
It has no accessory besides that.
A small Lego Donald Duck keychain that matches my Daisy Duck one.
He was being serious about matching with me?
I can't handle it anymore, "You got a matching one like mine." I blurt out.
Noah's turns his head to me,"I told you I would match with you, didn't I?" He says, casually. Like it's a normal thing to do.
Is it?
"Don't you have some reputation to uphold or something?"
He looks at me like I do Math sums for fun. "What is that even supposed to mean?"
"Now you're not nonchalant is what I am trying to say."
He shrugs, "Being chalant is way better."
"Chalant?" I laugh.
"The opposite of nonchalant," He tries to explain like I didn't understand.
"I know, you grandma. I just didn't expect you to ever use that word."
"Obviously I wouldn't, you don't happen to know that classic quote, 'one bad apple spoils the barrel.' do you?"
I scoff as I nudge him lightly, "Please. I am so not the bad apple. But you are considered the barrel in this because you're the same size as it."
He cracks up like I didn't just insult him, but I'm not complaining because it sounds deep and so good.
Despite the insulting and playing around a warm feeling settles in my chest at the thought of him being so good to me this year, so unlike how the old Noah was.
Or maybe he was always like this and I just didn't notice.
"Thank you, Noah. I love the keychain. It's going to be on my bag forever," I pause, but continue, "and thank you for being there for me that day. I needed a friend and you were there."
For a moment he just stares. At me. At my smile. His jaw flexes and he swallows. Then he makes a face, "Don't look at me like that."
I just shrug, still smiling in an awfully cheerful mood as we head out the gates of the school
The sky is grey and the clouds are covering the sun. I hear faint rumbles.
I brighten up even more as I clap my hands like a little kid excitedly, "It's going to rain! Yes, yes, yes!"
