The dinner went smoothly, and you were still talking hours after you had finished eating.
Giyuu hadn't been too talkative, just occasionally chipping in when asked questions.
He was polite and attentive, his calm presence blending into the warmth of the evening. Your mom had taken a liking to him almost immediately, and your sister was already ready to plan the wedding.
"Alright," your mom finally sighed, standing up and stretching. "I'm calling it a night before I end up interrogating this poor man more."
As everyone began clearing the table, you leaned in closer to Giyuu. "You okay?"
He nodded, his eyes meeting yours. "I'm fine. Your family is lovely."
After everything was tidied up, your mom insisted that you and Giyuu take the guest room for the night instead of driving back so late.
"Are you sure?" Giyuu asked.
"Absolutely," your mom waved him off. "It's already made up, and I wouldn't feel right sending you both out so late."
"Thank you," he said softly, his gratitude genuine.
-
Later, as you both settled into the familiar guest room, you let out a long breath, finally letting the day's events settle in.
"You okay?" Giyuu asked as you sat quietly on the edge of the bed.
"I'm fine. Just thinking,"
"About?"
"People,"
"Yeah?"
"Yeah."
His arm slipped around your shoulders, pulling you closer. "I'll do my best to make your father proud," he murmured, pressing a soft kiss to your hair.
You leaned into him, letting your eyes flutter shut for a moment.
Eventually, you spoke again. "Thanks for coming with me. I know this wasn't exactly the relaxing weekend I promised."
Giyuu let out the faintest laugh, brushing a thumb over your arm. "I'd go anywhere with you."
You smiled, eyes still closed. "You're getting good at this boyfriend thing."
"Only because I'm in love with you," he said simply.
And just like that, the chaos of the day melted away.
-
At 6 am, you were already awake.
The house was quiet, the soft creak of the old floorboards beneath your feet, the only sound as you padded down the hallway. The sky outside was still tinted with the pale blue of early dawn, and the faint smell of coffee brewing meant your mom was already up too.
You found her in the kitchen, stirring a pot on the stove with that same wooden spoon she always seemed to have.
"Couldn't sleep?" she asked, glancing at you over her shoulder.
You shook your head, sliding into one of the chairs at the table. "Just woke up early. Habit, I guess."
She poured you a mug and handed it over. "He's sweet. Giyuu."
You smiled softly, hands wrapped around the warm ceramic. "Yeah. He is. I think I love him."
She didn't smile, not right away. Just nodded as if she'd known it before you even said it. "Then don't let fear mess it up. Good men are quiet sometimes, but they love loud in their own way."
