Woods, a nature reserve turned into a war zone. It had survived it all, the Great Northern War, Napoleon, the Russian Civil War, the Continuation War, World War 2, collapse of the soviet union all for it to go to shit in the end. The woods have become the go-to place initially for secret things to happen and somewhat still are given the vast wilderness. Weiss and Floridaman arrived in the woods today for some spring cleaning, so to speak, they have taken a job from Jaeger through Mechanic. Thankfully it's none of the more crazy tasks some people get handed from him like dehydrate yourself in a bush for a few hours to show him how much humans can survive without water or kill scavs a 100 meters away with bolt action rifles while only using irons.
This time, Floridaman and Weiss were tasked with culling the population of scavs. According to Jaeger, there had been a new scav gang that moved in for whatever reason. They were pretty sizable, about 10 members in total hauling enough living supplies for most of them with them from wherever they came from. Already, they were clashing with the locals, especially Shturman's gang. All the scavs were annoying enough in his woods, and all this shit made Jager really annoyed. Annoyed enough to hire Floridaman and Weiss. Intel was that the scav gang set up beyond the northern UN checkpoint and were using a hole in the minefield to access the rest of the woods.
It was only natural that the 2 of them set up on top of the eastern rocks. It was a hard climb, but worth it as anyone trying to reach them would either fall down trying or alert them to their presence while trying to climb up. It also was a scav extract, and Jaeger never never specified if they should kill only scavs from that gang or any specific rules, just only to cull the population like wild dogs.
But there was the problem that Weiss didn't have something that she could snipe with, a long-range weapon, so to speak. Her Vector wasn't gonna cut it, so he just bought a Mosin Nagant sniper variant from Jaeger when they got the job from him that probably hadn't been used since the Second World War and had been sitting in a Soviet storage depot for over 50 years now. Concerns about its reliability were reasonable, but it looked to be in pristine condition, so there's that. Other than the weapons and general equipment, Floridaman and Weiss brought up food and supplies to last up to 2 days in the woods. These rocks would be their home for the next 2 days as they camped out the scavs.
It was miserable to be in such a place like the woods again that he knew, but the payout was good, plus Jaeger threw in some food as a bonus to the standard pay. By the time everyone does their missions, they would rake in about a week's worth of food and some more money to buy another week's worth of food for everyone. If they play their cards right, they could get about 2 weeks to find anything about Terragroup's multidimensional research activities. However, that would entail stretching food out as much as they can, resulting in the ever horrid feeling of hunger looming over all of them.
It was now early in the morning. The morning fog had arrived restricting eyesight, so they would have to rely on headsets even more. This place would be beautiful if it wasn't a war zone with people dying left and right every day now. Floridaman was holding up alright. He was used to this after all, but Weiss looked to be struggling while trying to hold it all together with coping duct tape. No scavs had come past their path yet, but they had been prone on their stomachs for about 2 hours now with all their weapons set up on bipods or rocks. A little camp tarp tied above them between trees and rocks provided cover from rain and drones while around them was snacks and water to keep them going.
"You doing alright?" Floridaman checked in on Weiss out of concern, twisting his body over to face her dragging the front of his chest rig across the dirt. Like that mattered since he put all the spare magazines of his weapon beside it for easy reloading when needed.
"Yeah, I'm fine..." The way Weiss responded didn't sound like she was fine. It lacked emotion, energy, she sounded defeated somewhat and was just going along with the tsunami waves that were life carrying her around for now. Well carrying would be a word to but it lightly, more like being thrashed around violently.
