Chapter Twenty~ What Have I Done?

After the party I decided to take a walk on the beach. Everyone was asleep, so I just quickly changed into sweat pants, and threw on Kyle's jacket, put my hair in a pony tail and put on some toms and walked out back to the beach.

As I started to slowly walk down the beach, away from Chloe's house, away from Chace, away from everyone, a figure slowly appeared. Matt. I stopped, quickly turning to go back, but he'd already seen me, "Lexi!" he called and I sighed, forcing myself to stop, turn and walk back.

"What, Matt?" I snapped.

"You-you have a pretty voice." he mumbled. I rolled my eyes slightly, "Chloe's going crazy. I can't take it anymore. I love her, but I need to be away from her, you know?"

I looked up at him, knowing exactly what he meant. Instead I said, "Has  she forced you to come out here and tell me this so I open up to you?"

"No, she's really going crazy. Ever since you came back she's wanted some 'revenge' for something. I guess it's taking Chace from her, but when he walked out on you I knew there was more. I asked her about it and she... snapped." the look on his face said it all. He wasn't lying. "She started yelling and pacing the house. I finally just shook my head and came out here." Matt sighed.

"Chace told me all about him whoring around... he didn't really seem to care." I whispered.

Matt looked over at me, "I know my cousin well, Lexi, and he was just mad. I can tell you this: he did go out with a lot of girls. He was a player, but I haven't seen him look at one girl like he looks at you. He told you that Chloe was like you, right?" he paused and I nodded, then he continued, "Kimmy, Nikki, Jamie, Amanda, Taylor, Bailey, and Rebecca were pretty much like you too. Kimmy had the same hair as you. Nikki the same eyes and laugh. Jamie had the same personality. Amanda the sense of humor. Taylor the face shape, eyes, hair and her smiled was somewhat close to yours. Bailey has your sense of humor, hair, eyes, laugh. Rebecca was the only one who bore the least resemblance to you, and that was his shortest relationship. After all of them, he kept going after the girls that bore the same resemblance to you. He thought you were gone forever, Lexi, so-"

"So he whored around looking for someone close enough to me to fill the hole I left in his heart when I moved..." I finished for him.

Matt nodded, "He stopped video chatting because he couldn't handle you having to talk to him from so far away. He wanted you here so badly. That whoring around was his desperate attempt to fin you again."

I sighed, "How do you know all this Matt?"

He chuckled, "Well after my parents died about five years after you left, I've been staying with Chace in the room right next to his. i'm sure you know how thin the walls are, I heard everything." He stopped to shudder lightly then continued, "The next year after I moved in, I heard him talking to a girl over the computer. You. I wasn't trying to eavesdrop, but I was reading and it w as quiet, and like I said... everything." we shared a small smile then he sighed, "I heard you two talking and I knew how far you were into each others lives. Even I couldn't help but fall for you a little... but then he just... stopped talking to the girl. I know everything I do because I could hear him on the phone with Brandon. He despises me so much because he knows I  heard him and when I asked him about it he got all defensive. Pushed me aside and played me off as a man whore. Hence the first comment he made in school."

I nodded and he stopped, letting it all sink in, "So Chace... never fell out of love with me since I left... but Chloe-"

Matt cut me off, "He loved Chloe... now not so much, but... he was in love with you... now i'm sure it hasn't changed. He's just angry and disappointed you chose Kyle. Just leave him be and he'll cool down."

I shook my head, "No, no I can't leave it be. I don't want to be with Kyle but not have my best friend, but right now the only way to have my best friend is to dump Kyle, which i'm not gonna do either." I ran hands through my hair, suddenly feeling exasperated.

"Just do what you think is right, Lexi. That's all I have to say... and... I'm sorry for everything. Cheating with Chloe, causing drama with Chloe... Chloe."

I laughed lightly "It's okay... after what you just did for me I think we're good."

He smiled then looked back at Chloe's house, "I better go tame the beast."

"Good luck!" I called to him as he jogged away.

After Matt was out of sight I looked back at the water, "What am I gonna do?" I groaned to myself. "This is hopeless. This is what I get for trying to make everyone happy." I rolled my eyes at myself and walked back to the house, but instead of going inside I went straight to the hammock that was strung between two trees that grew in the middle of nowhere. Laying in it and getting comfortable, I felt the tears i've been trying to hold back for so long flow down my cheeks.
