The hills coiled beneath them like an ancient song. Trees waved in slow, sleepy rhythms. The road stretched ahead, sunlight now filtered through pine leaves as the car hummed softly along its path.
Inside, silence.
Except for the small sound of breath.
Her breath.
Shivika was still asleep, her cheek now resting softly against the edge of Siddharth’s palm—his fingers curled in reflex the moment her head had tilted. He hadn’t dared to move.
His other hand gripped the wheel tighter.
Every curve they passed, every stone on the road — he braced gently, steering carefully. She shifted once, her lips parting slightly in sleep. He swallowed hard.
> “She still does that,” he thought. “Breathes like she’s dreaming of something that scares her.”
And for the first time in three years, he was scared too.
Not of losing her — but of not being able to hold her again.
---
But no good moment lasts forever.
A small bump on the road jolted the car slightly.
Her eyes fluttered open.
Disoriented at first.
She blinked — and noticed something warm cupping her cheek.
Her eyes widened.
Her head jerked slightly, and she pulled away instinctively.
“Tum…” she whispered, straightening up, fixing her hair, her posture, her everything. “Tum kya kar rahe the?”
Siddharth looked at the road. “Tum soyi hui thi… aur seatbelt tumhara face…”
“You could’ve woken me.”
“I didn’t want to.”
A pause.
“You looked peaceful.”
Her eyes locked on him. “That doesn’t give you the right—”
He looked at her. Calm. Certain. “I wasn’t crossing a line. I was protecting someone I care about.”
Shivika looked away, heart hammering, jaw clenched.
> Why does he always say these lines that feel like soft grenades?
___
Eventually, they reached a small town nestled between tall green hills. The group had booked a secluded wooden cottage—modern yet rustic, with glass windows, a fireplace, and a large porch with a view of the valley.
The moment they arrived, the energy shifted.
Laughter returned. Wet clothes were changed. Karan and Kritika began squabbling over who gets the room with the balcony. Tanya was busy filming a vlog of the place. Reyansh pretended to be annoyed with the lack of Wi-Fi.
But Siddharth and Shivika… kept glancing at each other.
When she walked past him holding her suitcase, her shoulder brushed his.
He didn’t move.
