Shivika stood in front of the mirror, wearing half an earring and a full-blown expression of panic.

Her wardrobe was a mess. Three kurtis flung on the bed. Two rejected dupattas on the chair. One hair straightener overheating on the side table.

“It’s not a rishta meeting,” she muttered to herself, brushing out her hair.

“You’re just meeting the woman who literally heard you flirt on speakerphone last week.”

“...and saw you sneak into her house at 10 PM once.”

“Okay, maybe this is a rishta meeting.”

She reached for her new lavender suit — pastel, embroidered, decent-length sleeves.

“Yes. Soft girl energy. Sanskaari. No crop tops today.”
“Shut up, self-respect. We’re going to impress mummyji.”

She fixed her jhumkas, picked a minimal gloss, and grabbed a small gift box of handmade chocolates she'd ordered online and secretly repacked as homemade.

One deep breath.

“Let’s go win the future MIL.”

As she descended the stairs, trying to look casual in her pastel ethnic glory, her mother peered up from the kitchen doorway.

And blinked.

Twice.

> “Yeh kya hua? Shagun aa gaya kya?” her mom asked, confused.

Shivika gave an awkward smile. “Woh… bas… mood tha ethnic pehne ka.”

Her mom narrowed her eyes.

> “Mood? Kal toh tumne shaadi mein bhi jeans pehni thi. Aaj suddenly duppata-flying-in-the-air look?”

Shivika cleared her throat. “Woh... Siddharth ke ghar jaa rahi hoon.”

Instant silence.

Her mom stepped closer. Crossed her arms.

> “Aur uske liye eyeliner bhi laga liya?”
“Bhaiya ki shaadi mein toh kajal tak nahi daala tha.”

Shivika giggled nervously. “Mumma bas… unki mom ko thank-you bolna tha… gifts diye the shaadi mein.”

Her mom gave her The Look™.

> “Gift dene jaa rahi ho ya roka fix karne?”
“Ek minute—yeh box mein kya hai?”

Shivika shielded the chocolates. “Homemade chocolates. Tum nahi samjhogi. It's a vibe.”

Her mom raised an eyebrow. “Acha... toh main samajh gayi. Vibe ka naam ‘future sasumaa’ hai, na?”

Shivika turned red. “BYE MUMMA!” she shouted and ran toward the door.

Her mom called out, “Self-respect le jaana mat bhoolna!”

Shivika yelled back, “Mujhe pyaar mila hai, self-respect ka kya karna!”

Door slam.
Mom sipped her tea and shook her head.

As she stepped ,  adjusting her suit and balancing the gift box, Siddharth was already waiting by the gate.
