An: thank you for reading my book even tho it takes forever to update
"Children, it is too late to be out by all alone. Where are your parents?" Medusa asked.
"They're still on the bus," I replied before Percy could tell her that we were circus orphans.
"Where's the bus?" Medusa questioned looking around for the bus.
"It exploded a couple miles over there," I explained pointing in the direction of the now destroyed bus.
"We're lost. Is that food I smell?" Percy asked sniffing the air.
"Oh, my dears," Medusa gasped ushering us inside. "You must come in, poor children. I am Aunty Em. Go straight through to the back of the warehouse, please. There is a dining area."
We all thanked her as we went inside. I tried not to look at all the poor people who got turned into statues. Grover was whimpering nervously so I tried to calm him down by patting his back. I don't think it worked. We arrived at the dining area pretty quickly. It was very clean. I couldn't see any dust or dirt anywhere which was nice.
"Please, sit down," Medusa told us gesturing to the picnic tables.
"Awesome," Percy cheered sitting down at the closest picnic table.
"Um, we don't have any money, ma'am," Grover reluctantly told her.
"No, no, children. No money. This is a special case, yes? It is my treat, for such nice orphans," Medusa smiled. Yeah right. I bet she says that to everybody.
"Thank you, ma'am," Annie said.
"Quite all right, Annabeth. You have such beautiful gray eyes, child." Medusa said before going behind the counter to make the food.
I sat in silence avoiding eye contact with Grover wishing I had actually done something to change fate until Medusa brought out the trays heaped with delicious smelling food. Percy immediately started inhaling a burger which was as gross as it sounds, but I have to give it to him. It was a really good burger. The fries had a perfect amount of salt and the milkshake was a nice creamy vanilla.
"What's that hissing noise?" Grover asked.
"Maybe there's a snake," I replied a second before Medusa. Hopefully either he or Annie gets the hint.
"Hissing? Perhaps you hear the deep fryer oil. You have keen ears, Grover," Medusa told him giving me the stink eye.
"I take vitamins. For my ears." Grover explained even though he didn't have to.
"That's admirable, but please relax."
As Percy made small talk with the niceish snake lady, Grover was trying to get my attention but Medusa was still glancing in my direction every few seconds. I tried to make it seem like I was just playing with the rest of the food on my plate. As Medusa kept talking to Percy, she gradually stopped paying attention to me. I took the wax paper off my tray and using the milkshake I wrote Medusa's name. When I was sure she wasn't looking at me, I pushed the wax paper across the table for Grover to read.
"Maybe we should go. I mean, I'm sure the police will be looking for us to make sure we are ok." Annie said standing up as Grover hastily stuffed the wax paper into his mouth.
"Such beautiful gray eyes," Medusa repeated. "My, yes, it has been a long time since I've seen gray eyes like those."
"We should really go," I said before Annie could say it again.
"Yes!" Grover yelled swallowing the wax paper off of his own tray. "The police will be waiting! Right!"
"Please, dears," Aunty Em pleaded with us. "I so rarely get to be with children. Before you go, won't you at least sit for a pose?"
