I feel like I'm floating in darkness.
I'm weightless, speechless, and thoughtless.
It take a moment for me to realize that I've shifted into my wolf and retreated into her mind.
My wolf is howling from pain. That b*stard! How dare he have done this to us?
I say nothing.
Alpha, come on your Pack is relying upon you for directions.
Still I keep my mouth shut. There's a sigh as she plays her ultimate trump card.
What if Raze takes over the Pack seeing as you're not mentally fit?
Bingo!
My eyes fly open, and this time I am facing two silver eyes. It's my mate, everyone! Applaud! Not.
(A/N: I keep forgetting what they look like; next updates going to be their characteristics final)
"Mate," he murmurs, touching his forehead to mine. The stupid bond stops me from pushing him away, and fills me with ecstasy, from the fact that he is so close to us.
"Mine," I struggle to answer, my head throbbing. "Pack-mine."
"You thought I'd take over while you were unconscious?" His forehead wrinkles in hurt. "Sweet, I'd never do that."
"Yes-you did," I retort, coughing. He seems to understand, but doesn't respond. Instead, he reaches past me and gives me a cup of water. My only thought is of that cool liquid as it slides down my throat, and I clear my throat when I am done. "Wh-Where am I?"
"Hospital-"
"What?"
"Shh, I was kidding," he says softly, pressing me back down. "You were only out for five minutes, you're still in the clearing."
I sigh in relief. "Three visits in three days is enough for me, Raze."
The word feels so right to escape from my lips, and I close my mouth, worried to have more feelings that are not my own.
Just because I helped create them, does not mean that they are not your own.
What do you mean?
A child you adopt can just as easily become your real legacy, Alpha.
I see, I answer, my thoughts spinning. Surely I can't actually fall in love with Raze? He's my mate sure-
And the one created for you, your other have, one part of your soul, my exasperated wolf interrupts. If you are not willing to listen to reason-
Okay, I get it! I snap at her. I will not just become one of those pushovers, though.
So you're thinking about loving him already. That is good.
What? I- my mortification is cut short as Raze strokes my arm. "What are you doing?" I hiss, clenching my fists against the bliss.
"I was so worried, sweet," his melodic tone- scratch that! Tasha, focus sweetheart! Horrid, lying, backstabbing -
"Traitor!"
Tell me I just did not say that out loud.
"Why'd you say that?"
Oh I said it out loud. Just great.
He pulls back with hurt blossoming in his eyes, and my wolf claws at my will. Comfort our mate, you idiot!
F*ck off.
With pleasure, she snarls, throwing herself at my barrier.
I summon up every scrap of self-control I possess and push my mate away. Once he's a safe distance away, my wolf calms down. Why've you hurt him? she whines softly. I grit my teeth as he calls, "I'll stay here, sweet, until you want me to come closer!"
Why does he have to be so understanding now?
Because you Marked him-
A rhetorical question, backstabber.
Look, I know I did wrong, but you hurt him so I think we're even.
Not even my mom knows me this well- wait, bad example. I don't have a mom.
I snarl at him, "Meet me at twelve. I'm taking you to our next challenge."
"But-"
"Just do it," I interrupt. He shakes his head. "Your father-"
"Please?" I mutter, my tone desperate. He hesitates, then nods. "Fine."
I sigh and sit up as he walks away. Oh my wolf... I'm already begging.
That's not necessarily-
Tasha!
Ugh, fine, all-knowing great Alpha. I'm off.
Blessed relief, I think dryly.
"Are you okay, Alpha?" a pack member asks. Her tone is speculative, and I rake through my memories. "Oh, hi, Snow."
"I f*cking asked if you're okay, b*tch," she mutters, surprising me, before smiling brightly and falsely. "Hi-"
"What the hell are you saying?" I growl. My claws are out, and I struggle to retract them.
"I? I mean, me?" she asks, surprise evident in her voice. The urge to slash her face is overwhelming, and I get up to face her. I scowl and snarl, "Don't think I'm stupid. You cursed at me; that is unacceptable, you mother of whores."
"Wh-How dare you?" she sputters. "I'm not cursing at you- I just-"
"Save it, Snow," I say angrily. "I f*cking heard you. Tell me what you think gives you the right to-"
"Because you're weak," she interrupts, her pale eyes flashing at me. I'm so surprised that I stumble back. "Weak?"
"Yeah. You fainted like twenty times in the past three days," she points out, and I narrow my eyes. "I'm your-"
"Alpha? But you need to earn my respect," she finishes, cutting me off. Not showing any emotion, I grab the b*tch's arm. "Who the hell do you think you are?"
"The best trainer in the clan," she shoots back in reply. Calmly, I release her and say pleasantly, "Perhaps we can come to an agreement."
Snow hesitates, but I see her struggling with curiosity. Eventually, she gives in. "What agreement?"
I wink. "You said you're the best trainer in the clan?"
"Yes."
"But who's the best fighter?"
"Me," she says after a few moments. I let out a long sigh. "And there we have it!"
"What are you talking about?" she snorts. I shrug. "You think that you're the best fighter. But I think that I am."
Her face wrinkles as she retorts, "I haven't seen you fight, but judging from your inability to stay awake for more than four hours a day, well, I'm pretty sure I can beat you easily."
She just did not f*cking go there, my wolf's usually reserved voice howls, sounding aggravated. I agree heatedly, then smile with an effort at the b*tchy little fool.
"How about we have a duel, then?" I suggest lightly, calling the Beta and Gamma. They'll be here in two minutes.
"A duel? With you?" Disgust coats her words, and I sigh. "Well, seeing as you're the better fighter, I suppose it won't make a difference if I lose- which is certainly what you expect will happen, right?" I question. She glares at me. "Of course!"
"Then it would be oh, so sad, if I won?" I murmur, my tone clearly amused. "Because if I do, then I expect full retribution for your words."
"And if I win?" she growls. I shrug again. "I'll be humiliated before the entire Pack and you will probably be elected as Alpha?"
"Fair."
"Deal?"
"Deal," she agrees, clasping my hand a little too tightly. I hold it and clamp down on her knuckles with my fingers. One huge shake, and I hear a faint pop as one breaks. "Oops," I murmur. "I must have shaken your hand too much... I hope I didn't break anything."
She clutched her hand and hisses in pain as it moves, throwing daggers at me with her eyes. "No problem... Alpha," she grits out. "It'll heal in an hour or so."
"Ah, such a pity," I quietly say.
"What?"
"I said, your hands so pretty," I answer loudly. She snorts in a very unladylike manner. "Then they'll be the last things you see before I punch you in the face."
"Not if I f*cking kill you first."
"Excuse me?" she asks.
Annoyed, I grab her shoulder as my Beta and Andria walk in. "I said, not if I f*cking kill you first."
"Alpha?" Beta asks, concern lacing his words. Andria adds, "What's wrong? Should we kill anyone?"
"Ha, sorry, no," I reply. "This b*tch just called me weak and unfit for being Alpha... Is it within the rules to beat her into a pulp?"
Hell no.
"Yes, Alpha," Gamma answers, her face lighting up.
"Certainly," my Beta adds softly. "Is this to be a fight to the death or until one submits?"
"Since it is a fight for the position of Alpha," I muse, "Until the death of one or the other."
Come to the clearing, everyone! Snow from the eastern tribe has challenged the Alpha to a duel. It is a fight to the death, and no one may interfere.
I nod approvingly, then look around the clearing. It's actually not even justified by the word, clearing. Around twenty acres wide and thirty-five acres long, it's a small, grassy plain surrounded by forests on every side. We use it for Pack meetings, and apparently six thousand wolves can fit here. The reason we call it the "clearing" is because it started out as a meadow in the huge forest, and gradually as battles began being fought here, the trees started to clear away, hence the word clearing. The Pack doesn't have a history long enough to have been the only ones to start the unintended demolishing, but had taken over this land after it was already ten acres cleared.
It's actually sort of small....
Yeah. That's f*cking greedy wolves for you.
Back to the present-
No! Raze's agonized voice howls as Snow and I tussle on the ground, shifting every few moments from human to wolf to make gripping each other harder. She lungs at my flank and seizes it in her teeth. Yelping, I leap away, leaving her with a considerable chunk of flesh in her mouth. Before she can do anything else, I whip around and grab her leg, crunching down on it to crush the bones. Transforming into a human again, she screams and grabs my neck in a choke-hold. Bucking, I run through my memories and finally figure out what to do: roll over and wriggle so she gets crushed into the ground.
She howls beneath me, once more a wolf, and I twist around and clamp onto her other leg. She whimpers as I tug and it snaps, dislocating.
Bravely, she tosses me off of her and rotates her shoulder, snapping it back into place with a wince-worthy crack!
"F*cking dog," I grunt, shifting into a human and twisting her tail in my paw-er, hands.
She shifts quickly into her other form as well, her tail wrenching out of my grip, and at once, I'm a wolf, chasing her and tearing my teeth into her calf. Blood spills out, and my wolf instinctively takes over, launching at Snow's back. Except, she's not there. She's behind us, crouching and growling (as a wolf). Favoring her left paw, she limps towards us, then in an incredible leap, she tears a hole into my ear, biting through the soft flesh. Instant agony. The burn of the wound exposed to the open air, her teeth parting my skin...
F*ck!
I twist again, gasping as my ear is wrenched from her muzzle, then grip her leg, the injured one.
Blood is streaming down my face, blinding me, and she throws back her head and howls. Through the red liquid, I glimpse her throat, then take the chance and lunge. She's dead before she knows it, defeated by her arrogance.
My Pack erupts in cheers and my Beta comes up. This is your rightful Alpha, he howls. By right of conquest and of bravery.
Yes, Alpha! they chant. You are our Alpha! We accept you!
Oh my wolf- I can't think straight. I stumble and sit down, trying to force my body into the ground. I feel sick.
The blood on my claws glisten, and I stare at them. Blood that, no matter how hard I scrub, will always leave a trace of their scent in my memories.
***
No matter how many enemies I kill
Always there are more
This is my destiny to fill
Since I'm nobody, just Poor...
Their blood rises on the wind
Engulfing me in the spray
The scent shall never leave me
However much I pray-
