I was already getting ticked off from always walking through damp forests, this was getting me nowhere. But I had to just live with it and moved on, since this was my only chance to find the killer. Speaking of which, where was that son-of-a-bitch anyway? How long has he been on the run since he left his car? I sighed in frustration and kicked the dirt in front of me as I continued to walk. But to my surprise, I could hear cars driving close by, so I tried to hurry towards the sound.
When I got back to the road, I was right, there was another town here, but by the size of the buildings, it looked more like a city. That pleased me very much, realizing that I actually missed civilization than I thought. I carefully jumped over the railing and by looking both ways, I run across the road to get closer to the buildings. I exhaled of relief as I looked around, it was more elegant than that other pathetic little town way back there. When I passed by a mirrored window, I had to stop and see how I was doing, but it was a pretty sad picture. My clothes all ragged and distress, my desensitized hair, and dont forget about my hunger that still ate my stomach away. I sighed deeply, closing my eyes gently and shaking my head. I needed to get better before I continued, Jess would be furious if she saw me like this, but that made me grin a bit. She always kept me tidy and careful around anything, it was a bit too much, but I didn't really mind since she cared so much for me. That woman helped me get through so much in our lives; if I could take her place, I would in a snap, but then again, I wouldn't want her to feel the way I've been feeling lately. I couldn't even imagine how she would handle a situation like this, but look me, I'm not doing that well so to speak.
I glanced back up at the window and shockingly, I could've sworn I saw the guy. My eyes widen as I spun around to see if it was true and I suppose my luck was regaining since I saw him quickly walk away on the other side of the street. I tensed up and almost sprinted forward but froze, remembering that I was in a public area, I didn't wanted to look like a lunatic, almost getting killed by runing out in the middle of the street. I took a deep breath as I relaxed to follow my target from my distance.
My mind was going all over the place as I kept quiet, still following my suspect. All the anger I was saving up started to boil inside of me, I couldn't wait to get my fucking hands on his throat, to teach him a lesson. But I had to stay calm, I didn't want to be more of a killer than he was. When I saw him turn the corner, I stopped for a brief moment, thinking about how to catch him easier. I glanced around for find a shortcut, I found a pretty good one, and without a moment to loose, I quickly took it.
When I found a good hiding spot, I had a good lookout for spotting my criminal. I stood close to the edge of the wall when I saw him coming closer. I took a deeper breath, as much air that my crushed lungs could take up to calm my nerves and exhaled very softly. As soon as I heard the tip-toes of those off light gray shoes, I didn't resist to hold back. I grabbed his shoulder and slammed him hard against the other wall across from me, holding him tight, crushing his shoulders by pushing them up against the brick wall and I stared him deeply in the eyes as he stared back at me in fear. Without a doubt, he was the right one, it fit Jake's description perfectly.
"I finally found you, you little bastard!" I growled at him, I wasn't giving him any chances to slip by me this time, even though he was scared to death.
"H-hey man, I-I don't know what you want! P-please d-don't h-hurt me!" He panicked but I tightened my grip on him.
"Don't you fucking give me that crap! You're dead to me!" I hissed at him as I brought my knife close to his neck. But this time, I wouldn't doubt if he was already shitting his pants as I could see the fear growing in his eyes. "Any last words? Oh wait, maybe I shouldn't let you have the privilege of those since you didn't give her a fucking chance to speak!" I was practically yelling at him on the top of my lungs.
I saw his eyes widen, realizing who I was and the coincidence. "Oh, you're.... Shit man, I didn't mean to do it! I was only told to! H-he was gonna give me-" He started saying but I tightened my grip more, placing the knife on the skin of his neck.
"Didn't mean to do it?! You didn't mean to kill the love of my life?! Who the fuck are you working for?!" I needed him to spill it out before I cut out his heart like he did to me.
He was too scared to talk until I shoved him again. "Talk damn it!"
"Okay okay! Devin just told me to do it after the wedding! That's all I got!" He quickly reported, as he started shaking more and tears ran down his face.
Devin? As in Devin Jackles? As in.... Jessica's brother Devin? My brother-in-law? My eyes widen as my heart dropped and I slowly backed up, letting the kid dropped down to his knees, still shaking uncontrollably. This doesn't make any sense. I shook my head. Why would Devin want to kill his sister? There was something the kid wasn't telling me. I glared at him and kneeled beside him, holding him tightly again.
"Are you sure you're telling the truth?" I asked him seriously in my dark tone. I couldn't let him slip away.
He slowly nodded, whipping the snot and tears that continued to run down his face. "I swear! He gave me a note that said to kill the blonde one after the special occasion. He gave me the address of the motel. I didn't want to do it, I swear! I couldn't bring myself to do it until I knew my life was on the edge. I was so scared that I didn't even realize I've actually done it until I saw the blood all over my hands! I'm so sorry!" His voice was cracking, I didn't know if it was from lying or fear.
I narrowed my eyes towards him and shook my head, looking down. What should I do? Believe his pathetic story or hold him hostage? My mind was so jumbled that I couldn't get a single straight thought out. But there was only one way finding out, to visit my brother-in-law to figure out the real truth.
I stood up, dragging the kid up along and I glared at him. "Show me where he is." That was a command, I didn't even let him question it as he hesitated but nodded in agreement.
He looked at me, apologetic with a side of fear. "I'm so sor-" I pushed him before he could even say another word.
"Don't, you have no right to speak, got it?" I barked at him, seeing him slowly nod.
Just as I thought I was at the bottom of this case, it had a twisted mind of its own. But thank god I caught it just in time. I was going to get my questions answered, I'll force them to speak. I never thought that I would be seeing my brother-in-law again, but hopefully this will be the last time before his funeral.
