It wasn't until the next morning that the search begun. Chief knew that something odd was going on with Nick, that's when he made his decision to check up on him on his own. He tried to contact Jake about Nick's condition but he was out of reach.
As Chief approached Nick's door to his house, the quietness seemed unsettling which made him very concern. He tried to look through the shaded windows but could see or hear nothing. With a dissapointing sigh, he made his way down the stairs. Chief took one glance around the place before he made his departure, but something stopped him from leaving as he looked at the forestry trail ahead of him. It could be a possibility that Nick would've gone through there. Was he hurt badly and needed help? Chief had to take the chances to help his friend, no matter what the end result was.
Carefully making his way the path, Chief brought out his flashlight to make it easier to look into the darkness. There wasn't much to see as he continued to walk but when he spotted tracks in front of him, his curiosity grew. How many people were here? Was Nick kidnapped again? Following the footsteps, Chief sensed that he was coming closer to what he was looking for; and he did. He stopped right as his foot touched the flesh of a body, and when he looked down, the horrific image of Nick's dead body froze Chief in his place.
Laying on his back, Nick's face was pale as snow and his eyes were slightly opened, for the gray color to shine through his pulps. Chief cautious crouched down to look at the body more closely. There was a pile of dried blood on his side, and when Chief touched it lightly, it was already hardened.
"Damn Nick, what did you to do yourself?" He whispered from the shock of what he was seeing.
Sighing deeply, Chief stood up and took of his phone, dialing a few numbers before it started ringing. Finally someone picked up.
"Chief Adam, what's the problem?" They said concernly.
"Trace this call and me an ambulance as soon as possible. One of our men is down." He replied firmly.
"If I may ask sir, is it Nick Kendall?" They asked, uncertain if it was appropriate.
Chief sighed and glanced at the body. "Yes, it is. Now hurry with the ambulance." He hung up and turned towards the deceased man that was once the best agent in the bureau.
"I'm so sorry for what has happened to you Nick. I hope you found what you were looking for and that you were happy in your lifetime. You did well with your work, I'm proud of you." Chief nodded at Nick as if he was listening closely.
Kneeling down to search his body, he didn't find much but only two good rings in his pocket. Chief studied them close as he read the insinuations inside the rings. Nick Kendall on one, and Jessica Kendall on the other. He remembered their wedding, it was a lovely wedding, really. When he saw Nick's proud face of becoming the husband to his dream girl, Chief knew that Nick would do anything for Jessica. And he did, despite his heartbrokenness, Nick successfully found his answers to his case. But he didn't stop there, he was sure that there was something else. But whatever it was, that something else must've taken over him, giving him pain and sorrow from his lost and destroyed him until he could no longer move.
With another deep sigh and a shake with his head, Chief stood up and waited for the medics to arrive. As he waited, he thought of how different things would've gone if it were Nick to have died first, or if the whole case didn't happen. He remembered Nick telling him that they were excepting a new member to start their own family. That made Chief smile, knowing that Nick would've been a great father. But none of that could ever happen because this was the end for them. Maybe they were happy now though. Despite the fact of them dying in different times, they lived a happy life together. And that's what it was all about right? To live happily ever after? Maybe. But now knowing that they both achieved so much together to keep each other safe, made it more peaceful to know that they died for one another.
