As the sun started to set, we had most of the materials that we needed to begin our project. It wasn't much, but it was a start. We walked down the same streets as before, but now filled with more people, making me a bit uncomfortable. I didn't like crowds, even though I could handle them for an amount of time. But just the pressure and claustrophobic feeling, it made me all tense inside. Trying to keep from freaking out, I couldn't help but hold Steve's hand tighter as I glanced over at the crowds of people swarming towards us.
Steve look up at me with a gently smirk. "Mr. tough guy getting soft cause of a couple of people?"
I rolled my eyes. "Yeah, sure, whatever. Just not used to this." I couldn't but blush a bit from the embarrassing fact.
We continued walking down the streets as I tried to keep as calm as possible. It was frustrating that my body wanted to freak out just from a couple of people, but I fought the urge as my skin was starting to tingle. It kept tingling until I finally realized that it wasn't my fear that was making the body vibrate, but my phone.
I paused and told Steve to hold on for a minute as I took my phone out.
"Yeah?" I spoke into it.
"Nick, we kind of need you here for a bit." I heard my chief sound angry, this wasn't good.
"Whats going on?" I asked him, concerned. Steve looked at me puzzled as he patiently waited.
"There's been another murder that took place downtown. Witnesses heard screaming towards the bridges." Bridges, that means it's probably by West Burnside Street.
"Alright, I'll be down as soon as I can." I hung up and looked at Steve, who was still worried.
"What's happening? Is everything alright?" He asked, trying to stay calm.
"We have to take a side trip before we go home, is that alright with you?" I knew that this was a terrible thing to ask, since the area that I was called for was highly dangerous, but I couldn't back out now.
To my surprise, Steve understood what my position was and agreed on the side trip. This made me extremely nervous, taking my innocent friend on my job, but I had no choice, I had a task and it was urgent.
So without a moment to loose, we went in the car and were our way. My heart hasn't stopped pounding ever since I've encountered the crowd, but now it's been quicken, which made me more afraid.
Crimes in Portland weren't common, but when there was one, it was serious. I couldn't let this go, even though I was "taking a break", but I think that my break long enough. When we got to the scene, there were already medics and other police cars surrounding the area that was blocked off. I took a deep breath and faced Steve.
"Hang here, okay?" I instructed him and he nodded, still shivering. Poor thing.
I got out of the car and locked it, keeping Steve more secure, and made my way towards the scene. Bending under the tape that marked the affected area, I looked around, letting my detective side take over my brain. As I saw Chief walk over to me, my blood was pumping.
"Give me the news. What happened here?" I asked him as we both turned towards the scene.
"One of the witnesses said that there were three black males that started some commotion. Apparently it was some sort of set up for one of the guys. They were trying to get drugs, of course, but the two men who set the whole thing up murdered the guy." He gestured his head towards the body.
I glared at it, studying it's features where the man laid. "So the two of them left?"
Chief nodded. "Apparently, and that's the reason why I called you is cause I know that you can catch those two with your speed."
