As I was pacing around the room, trying to figure out how to start this investigation, there was a knock on the door and I let Jake into the room, though I could see that he was annoyed by the urgent call.
"So why did you have to ca-" he started to grumbly say but was suddenly shocked when his eyes followed the blood trail towards Jess and his eyes widen. "Jesus.." He said under his breath. "Nick... I-"
"Don't. It happened, okay?" I quickly said, glaring at him deeply. "I just need you to round up a couple of guys to clean this up as I go out and find him." I told him as I brushed passed him and walked towards the closet.
Jake looked around concerned. "Nick, are you sure you're up to do that?" He knew that I was hurt, even though I didn't show it.
After putting my jacket on, I looked at him, not changing my expression. "Jake, this is fucking serious. There's a killer out there and I wouldn't be doing my job if I just let him get away."
Jake sighed as he ran his hand through his hair, shaking his head. "I know what you mean but still, you haven't done something like this before. What if it's bigger than you think it is? You'll probably need backup or someone to-" I cut him off again.
"Absolutely not Jake, I know what I'm dealing with. I need to do this alone. I can't risk anyone else's lives in danger." I told him. He was like a brother to me, I couldn't lose someone else that I cared so deeply for.
"But how do you even know where to start looking? Just by that piece of paper?" Jake asked. He was always the one who was cautious about everything in every situation.
Just before I opened the door, I sighed. "Jake we do this every day, I'm pretty sure I know how to start this." I turned to him. "Just try to clean this up, alright?" I turned towards the door but before I could walk out, Jake put his arm on my shoulder.
"Please be careful Nick, you don't know who you're dealing with." He said to me. I glanced over at Jessica's body and tensed up but slowly exhaling. "We'll take care of her, don't worry about it." Jake gave me a small grin, I gave him a brief nod and headed out the door. I couldn't let my emotions distract me on this one, even thought when finding this killer, I was going to rip his guts out.
