As we were enjoying each other's warmth, standing in front of the sea. My head tried to keep up with my thumping heart. I was engaged, to my best friend, the love of my life. We stayed there, facing the waves, in a comfortable silence, just enjoying each other's company. Enzo placing soft kisses on the crown of my head from time to time.
But there was one thing I got to understand in this family and line of work. Nothing was ever calm for too long, and that theory was proven to me when Matteo and Lorenzo came running up to us, breathless with a happy Nugget beside them.
"Capo-" Lorenzo started, immediately, we both turned to face them, both our faces already changing from the soft smile of happiness to concern and furrowed brows.
"It's Mila-" Matteo continued, my breath got caught in my throat, was she okay? Did something happen to her or the baby?
"She's on her way to the hospital with James, she's having her baby girl?" He finished. For a second I let out a sigh of relief, relieved that nothing had happened to them. Instantly, tho, my heart raced, she was in labour, she needed me there and I wouldn't miss that for the world.
"James say she isn't experiencing much contractions as of now, but she really would like Maggi to be there." Matteo finished, looking at me quickly. Our relation had gotten better since that drunken night, but still, my heart ached whenever he looked at me like that. As if looking too long at me would burn him in some way. I shook my head, this wasn't important, Mila was.
"Let's go then. We'll pass by the house to change and then we'll go to the hospital." Enzo said, looking at me, I just nodded at him and we intertwined our fingers together. Making our way back towards the car.
As soon as we got home, I ran to the kitchen to ask the chef to prepare us some snacks. I knew Mila wouldn't be able to eat anything besides ice chips, but I wasn't going to leave her side for a second so I needed tones of food, because you know me, I stress eat. I just managed to see a startled chef nodding at me before I was running up the stairs again.
In our bedroom, I went straight to the closet, not realising that on the way I had passed by Enzo, who's smiling face at my erratic behaviour, changed to concern when he saw my trembling hands.
"Amore." he said softly coming behind me, his hands enveloping me in a hug, my back pressed to his front, the action causing me to stop me from finding the clothes I wanted to wear. The action grounded me, and it felt like I could breathe again.
"Everything is going to be fine bambina." he said softly against the shell of my ear. I just closed my eyes and took a deep breath, nodding. I was kind of afraid of labours, I had heard so many horrible stories, so many births that hadn't gone to plan. I was worried, for Mila, and her bundle of joy.
"We have the best doctors helping her, she is going to be fine." he said softly, his voice sending shivers at how certain he seemed to be. I wiped a lone tear that had managed to fall during my panicked state, and turned in his embrace, to face him.
"I know — I know, it's stupid to be that afraid. That panicked over something that probably won't happen. But I just, can't help those thoughts and I'm so afraid for when it'll be my turn, because I want babies, with you, so bad, but I'm so afraid of that part." I said, feeling incredibly lucky to be able to open myself this much on those kinds of topics with him, but at the same time feeling stupid because almost every women go through that and, I knew our bodies were made for this, but it was just always so nerve wracking for me.
"My love." he said, stopping my rambling by pecking my lips softly. "I know how much that stresses you out, but there is no reason for it to go badly. The doctors are going to be there, to monitor her and the baby, and we'll be there for her for her. She is going to be just fine. I promise." he continued, gently putting my hair behind my ears, and touching my cheeks softly. I took a deep breath, and nodded at him. I kissed him softly and after a few seconds more in his embrace we parted to get dressed.
