The hallway outside the restroom was quiet enough that I could hear the distant music from the ballroom. Soft, expensive music. The kind that never quite felt real.
I took one step forward before I realized I wasn't alone.
Two men stood near the corner. One tall with kind eyes and long dark hair tied behind him. The other pale and sharp, like he was carved from still water. Both turned when they saw me.
Hashirama Senju smiled first.
"You must be Y/n."
His voice was warm in a way I didn't expect. Calm and welcoming, like this entire night wasn't built on tension and hidden rules. I returned a polite smile even though my nerves were creeping up my spine.
"Nice to meet you," I said.
"And you," he replied. "This place can feel heavy at times. I hope you are doing alright."
There was something in his tone that made me feel like he already knew the answer. Before I could respond, Tobirama shifted beside him.
His eyes were on me with full focus, almost studying me. Not in a rude way but in a way that made me feel seen in a way I wasn't used to.
"You look overwhelmed," Tobirama said.
I blinked at him. "I'm fine."
He tilted his head slightly. "You're lying."
My chest tightened. I wasn't used to someone calling me out that easily.
Hashirama rested a hand behind his back, watching me with quiet patience. "These events are demanding. Especially for someone adjusting to them."
I swallowed hard. "I said I'm fine."
Tobirama didn't look convinced. His eyes were a little too sharp. A little too curious. Almost like he was trying to figure out what I looked like when I wasn't pretending.
Hashirama continued the conversation gently.
"I imagine you did not expect to be the center of attention tonight."
"No," I admitted. "Not really."
"It happens when you are important," he said with a smile.
Tobirama added, "Important people tend to be watched from every angle."
His words lingered between us. I folded my hands together.
The silence stretched before Hashirama spoke again.
"We haven't had much of a chance to explore the city since arriving. I heard this area is beautiful during the day."
"The weather has been nice," he added softly.
"It would be nice to be out," I answered without thinking.
Tobirama's eyes flicked toward mine at that. Just a small reaction, but it was enough. I felt my breath catch. He stepped closer, stopping just one pace from me. Close enough that I could see the faint scar near his jaw.
"Is that something you want," he asked quietly, "to be outside?"
The question hit too close. My pulse picked up.
Before I could answer, Hashirama stepped in with a calmer tone.
"I hope this place does not feel like a cage to you."
I didn't respond. I couldn't. Because it did. Every hallway, every locked door, every rule I was forced to follow.
And Tobirama heard the answer in my silence.
He looked at me for a long second. Not pitying. Not judging. More like he was trying to understand how deep the damage went. It was the first time someone inside this world had looked at me like that.
"It is rare," Tobirama finally said, "to see someone here who looks like they still want something different."
My heart thudded painfully.
Before I could speak, footsteps echoed down the hall.
Izuna appeared first. His expression darkened immediately when he saw me standing with the Senju. His eyes went straight to my hand, like he wanted to check if either of them had dared to touch me.
Shisui arrived right behind him. His hand hovered near his side, ready to block anyone from getting closer to me. His eyes snapped to mine with a silent question. Are you alright.
Hashirama's warm smile returned, though it tightened at the edges now that we weren't alone.
"It was truly a pleasure meeting you," he said.
"You as well," I replied, keeping my voice steady.
Tobirama didn't smile. Instead he held my gaze one last time, like he wanted to say something but chose not to. Something unreadable flickered in his eyes. Interest. Concern. Curiosity. Something sharp enough to feel like a spark in my chest.
Izuna stepped between us and offered his arm.
"Y/n. We are needed."
I placed my hand on his arm even though every instinct screamed against it. My steps moved with his, but my eyes lingered on Tobirama for a moment longer.
He was still watching me.
Still studying me.
Still interested.
As Shisui walked on my other side and the hallway swallowed us whole again, I felt it settle deep inside me.
The Senju didn't just meet me tonight.
They noticed me.
And Tobirama...
Tobirama saw right through me.
