Chapter Song Rec: X-Ray by The Noise (I'm addicted to this song I'm ngl)
____________
"I think I see him."
Miles' voice was low as he tugged at the opening to the vent. The scientist the two of you had been tailing earlier had reappeared in the hallway below, before he'd disappeared into the room ahead. This one was it- this was where the symbiote was being held.
It had to be.
You weren't sure what you were supposed to do if it wasn't there.
You wouldn't mind if Quentin Beck threatened to kill you- in fact, you really couldn't care less.
But if he ended up hurting Miles or his mom...you didn't think you'd ever be able to forgive yourself.
And you didn't think Miles would ever forgive you either.
The vent made a soft creaking sound as Miles tugged it open. "How are we supposed to go down there if he's still there?" Your voice was soft as you peered down at the man in the lab coat.
He pulled his white gloves on, reaching into the black case on his desk. Your eyes landed on his computer. Locked. Ugh. He pulled out a clear vial the size of his hand and swirled it around. It had some sort of foggy substance in it. He flicked his index finger against it once, making a small clinking noise that reverberated through the room.
The room was only half lit up, and the rest was dark. He made his way towards the wall in search of a light switch. When he pressed the button, the rest of the room became illuminated, revealing a large shielded enclosure. You watched as he pulled at a lever at the bottom, pulling open a hatch that revealed a small red button. He pressed it.
The sheet of metal covering the enclosure seemed to move, revealing a thick plane of see-through plexiglass. That must've been where they were keeping it.
"Is that gas?" Miles moved to the side to help you see a little better, holding the vent to the side. The eyes of his mask were trained on the vial the scientist was holding, trying to decipher what it could possibly be for.
"I think it's...some sort of laughing gas. Maybe hydrogen sulfide? Is he trying to knock it out?" You leaned closer to the vent's opening and Miles stiffened. You immediately pulled back. You guessed he didn't want you near him anymore.
Fair enough.
The scientist pressed the vial into a small opening in the enclosure. It screwed in immediately before it suddenly pushed itself into the opening in the plexiglass and began pumping the willowy substance in.
At first, nothing happened.
The symbiote slammed itself against the glass with a screech. The scientist jumped back, nearly dropping his clipboard. Your heart sank in your chest. It looked exactly the way it had in your brother's videos, except...larger somehow. More dangerous.
It seemed to be trying to break itself out of the enclosure as it slammed itself against the wall over and over again. A few more hits later and it was beginning the slow down. The gas the scientist had injected seemed to be working, and it quickly retreating further into the enclosure.
Suddenly a phone rang. You nearly jumped at the sound, and the scientist did too. He pulled it out of his pocket with a sigh before turning the timer off and heading out of the room. He was probably taking his meal break.
Miles waited a moment before taking his chance and slipping through the opening. You quickly followed, landing on the tips of your toes in an attempt to stay quiet. You heard the door click behind you. The two of you were completely alone.
