"No, uh, Liz." He cut me off before clearing his throat. "It's not- we're, uh, we're moving to California. L.A., to be exact."

Every thought going through my head completely stopped, and I stared at Adam in silence.

"Uh, what?"

I felt like I couldn't move, as the air had just been sucked right out of me. What do you mean, my best friend since I was a little girl, the person who has been by my side through everything, was moving thousands of miles away from me?

"Liz?" Adam said after a few seconds of neither of us speaking.

"Uhm, mhm," I cleared my throat. "Uh, well, sorry. I just wasn't expecting that."

Adam nodded. "Yeah, I'm sorry, Liz."

I shook my head. "No, no. Don't apologize. This is amazing for you, Adam! You're getting adopted and are gonna live it up in the city! I'll just... I'll miss you."

I could see Adam soften up a bit. I very quickly regretted saying that. I hated being vulnerable, no matter who it was in front of. Although I have been getting better at it with Taylor.

"I'll miss you too, Liz. But we'll talk all the time, and, I mean, your mom is Taylor Swift now, I'm sure you're gonna visit LA a good amount." Adam replied, and I nodded. I  couldn't disagree with that.

"Yeah, you're probably right. I guess I just am so used to, y'know, having you right there. I mean, you're my best friend. It'll be so weird not seeing you almost every day."

"Yeah," Adam agreed.

"So, uh, when do you leave?" I asked.

"Next week," Adam replied.

"Oh, uhm, cool. Okay. That's- wow," I stuttered out. I really don't even know what else to say at this point.

"Yeah, so, anyway, I just really wanted to let you know in person," Adam replied.

"Well, I'm happy for you, Adam. About damn time," I replied.

Adam laughed. "Haha, thanks. I'm excited. I'll finally get to know what it's like to, y'know, have a family."

It's pretty great, I thought. "Well, I don't think anyone deserves it as much as you."

"Thanks," Adam replied, and I could see a faint blush paint his cheeks. "So I should get back. I'm supposed to go out with my new parents and spend some one-on-one time with them before the move."

"Okay, yeah. I'll see you at school then?" I replied, and Adam nodded. "Yep, see you then. Bye, Liz."

"Bye, Adam," I waved at him as he turned and walked in the opposite direction. When he got far enough away, I finally allowed myself to start breathing normally again. Wow, he's really leaving.

I'm insanely happy for Adam; he deserves this so much. But it'll just feel so weird, he was all I had for so long, school's just gonna be so awkward without him, he's like my second half.

I mostly kept my head down on the way home, staring at the cracks on the sidewalk.

When I got home, the house was pretty quiet, and the only sound I could hear was the sound from the TV in the living room.
