"Let's finish on something nice," the interviewer concluded. "We hear you have got engaged."
The politician took a deep breath, "people getting engaged is a wonderful thing and we, as a party, want to support those who are deciding to go on that endeavour. That is why we intend to look at why people are getting engaged and provide suitable aid. This is the reason we have just undertaken a review into the processes of engagement. Love is important to the party and engagement is a natural step towards the next journey in life, so we want the public to have confidence that we have considered all the factors in an engagement."
"OK," the interviewer paused. "But we are not talking about policy, we are talking about your engagement to your fiance."
The politician looked a bit lost, but carried on, "the policy of engagement is something that we, in the party, feel needs to be developed, which is why we are having a review into the factors that may or may not cause people to get engaged. Love is a key area of our society, and it is clear that we must protect it, otherwise the public will not have confidence in the government. We were elected by the people to serve the people and as such must take the mandate they have given us seriously."
"So," the interviewer countered, "are you not in love?"
The intake of breath lasted longer this time. "Love is an important part of any relationship and we, in this party, understand that that can lead to engagement. As already stated, we believe that getting engaged is a key part in anyone's life, which is the reason we are holding this review into engagement. Rather than rushing into any empty promises, we need to understand the issues out there. We have a duty to the public that voted us in to represent their views and take the difficult decisions. Decisions that were laid out in our manifesto."
"But this is not about politics," the interviewer only just held his nerve. "We just wanted to confirm you were getting engaged so we could congratulate you."
The politician looked away, thinking, formulating his response. "As stated before, we understand that..."
The interviewer, clearly at the end of his tether, interrupted, "just answer yes or no! Are you engaged to be married?"
"The thing about engagement..."
"THAT'S IT," the interviewer screamed and left.
