The Red Star

Chapter 48

 Bucky sat anxiously at the dinner table as Jay bustled about in the kitchen.

"I don't think I want to do this." he said.

"Well you're gonna have to." Jay said, "You are going to eat jell-o at least once in your life."

"But I've been told what's in jell-o and that's what makes me not want to." Bucky added, turning in his chair and looking at Jay suspiciously.

 As Jay grabbed a spoon out of the drawer she glanced up and said,

"Don't look at me like that." she laughed and continued, "You have to have it at least once and I'll never bother you about it again."

 Hurrying over to the table she slid a small plate before him with jello on it in the shape of a star. Bucky looked at it and frowned saying,

"A red star? Really?"

"Just eat it." Jay urged, "It's strawberry flavored."

 Bucky reluctantly reached down and picked up the spoon and slid it into the jello. He lifted it to his lips and paused, looking at Jay.

"Go on, eat." she said, sitting next to him.

 Bucky made a strange whimpering noise then popped the jello into his mouth and chewed. His brows came together and he looked at Jay asking,

"What kind of solid is this?"

"A gelatinous one." Jay replied with a chuckle.

 He looked at her with an annoyed glance and she laughed loudly, throwing her head back and almost falling off of the chair. Bucky caught her arm before she did though and he chuckled as he watched her. Jay ended her hysterics with a tired sigh and looked at Bucky intently, a smile still on her lips. He was staring at her with a dazed smile then leaned forward and kissed her softly on the lips, a movement to which she replied eagerly. His hand then left the spoon on the table and held her face while the other wrapped around her waist, pulling her almost onto his lap.

  Jay held his face in her hands at first, then resorted to wrapping her arms around his neck. Bucky's hands then dropped to her waist as he stood, pulling her even closer. It was then that Jay sensed that wave of guilt and fear coming from Bucky once more and for a split second that fear ran through her. For a single moment her heart ceased to beat and an unbearable fear seized her. However, this was interrupted by Peter walking in, speaking to Matthew in very loud tones.

 The two saw the scene and paused, as Bucky and Jay pulled away from each other and turned around.

"Oh please, don't stop on our account." Peter said sarcastically. 

"Get lost." Bucky said.

"I'm here for the food," Matthew added, hurrying over to the fridge.

"Will there be a show to follow?" Peter asked in the same sarcastic tone as before.

"I'm sure we can arrange that." Bucky said, looking at Jay with a facetious gaze.

"Well.." Jay replied.

 Peter and Matt only groaned with disgust before Moyra walked in as well, a sandwich in one hand and a beer in the other. On seeing this odd moment, she swallowed her bite of her sandwich and took a sip of beer. She seated herself across from the lovebirds and laughed saying,

"I guess I came where the party is happening."

"That you did." Jay said, slinging her arm around Bucky's shoulders.

 Moyra laughed again and Matt sat at the end of the table adding,

"And this is the point where it all gets a little weird."
