The girls were back at the table, tired of dancing. So they order a lot of drinks. Evan was surprised about how much Anna could drink and not being drunk yet, contrasting with Haley and himself. Margot had to help Haley to get into the bathroom, she was seeming sick. Anna was now talking with James, who was giving her a hard time.
– So? You got tired of play the groupie to that guy?
– Oh, why? Are you jealous for being overshadowed by him?
– Right!
– Don't be like this Jim, you know children love their new toys but there's always the old one that they can't throw away.
The boy was outraged for being compared to an old toy. He hated how Anna could drag him down knowing exactly were to hit. He was contracting his jaw and giving her a furious look. She was pretending not to see.
– You were embarrassing everyone with that eye contact like "I want you here and now and I don't care if there are people watching".
– I like to think that I have more class than that.
Anna said with indifference. He snorted with derision.
– I guess the show is kind of boring now without your help to make things interests.
– My guess it's that you want a little show for yourself.
He left the table and went to talk with some girls a few steps away, which were staring at him since he had arrived.
Anna turned her head into Evan's direction, which was ashamed of having seen the scene, and asked him with no second intentions:
– Do you think I'm pretty?
– Yes...
He answered confused.
– But that's all I am?
She had a melancholic air now. He said with sincerity:
– I don't think so.
She raised an eyebrow and smiled. Haley and Margot were back now, and Anna's best friend looked a lot better. She was carrying a glass of water.
– Do you want?
Anna looked at Margot, who was offering her a pill. She looked at Haley and asked:
– Have you taken it?
– No.
– I hope you're saying the truth.
Anna didn't have a problem with the things that Margot liked to use, but she didn't want Haley to use it while drinking. It was a stupid thing to do. She was nervous, so she took a cigarette out of Haley's bag and started smoke.
– I didn't know you smoke.
– I don't.
Evan raised an eyebrow, pointing to the cigarette in her mouth. She blew the smoke on his face, and he was disturbed by the smell, that wasn't the normal. Anna and the girls went back close to the stage, and Evan was alone at the table. He was feeling antiquated and uncomfortable; he knew he was boring now compared to the others. However, he wasn't complaining about it. He had no intention to deal with his problems like this.
"Why can't I just leave? It's not like she would be alone here", the boy was thinking. "Why?", that was the question that dwelt most people, bothering their minds during the time that remained loose, unanswered, and clamoring for attention.
