- Taking off my high heels?
Anna stared confused at her mother. Her face was swollen from crying and her eyes had still some vestige of blurred mascara.
- Don't come to me at this hour with this mood. I spent the night sleepless, where were you? Have you ever heard of something called cellphone?
Jenna was on a bad mood. She was speaking a little louder, so Harold came into the living room confused.
- What's going on?
- Look at her!
- God! Stop screaming! My head is aching! I get your point, whatever, I'm here now!
- Don't talk with your mother like this!
- Well it would be easier if she stopped treating me as if I'm a child!
- You're acting like one.
Harold had said. Jenna was getting close to her, sniffing her like a dog, and then she said:
- You smell like an ambulant bar! Have you been drinking enough to kill yourself Anna? And what is it that you smoke? Pot? Your hair it's full of it smell!
Anna had frozen. Even Harold, because he liked to drink, but Jenna was traumatized because of her father who was an alcoholic and died because of it. Ever since they could remember, she had throw speeches of abstention of alcohol, so get drunk wasn't the best thing to do if you lived with her.
- I... Yes I've been drinking, I'm not gonna die because of it! Geez, relax!
Jenna was horrified by her answer.
- What about drugs? Do not lie to me Anna!
- STOP SCREAMING! What the hell, I'm not a drug addicted! So what if I smoke once in my life, you're freaking out for nothing, I'm not using Crack for God sake!
- Anna...
Harold's voice was a suggestion to calm down. But Anna was too angry for notice. Jenna was expecting help her daughter not find her like this.
She went to the bathroom and took a cold shower, and then she felt like a 5 years old who did something wrong when she went to check if her parents were still on her way to the bedroom.
She locked the door, and throw her bag away. But when she looked at it, she realized it wasn't her bag, it was Haley's. Great. She took an antialergic without needed and it didn't take more than 5 minutes to her to fall asleep.
***
Anna woke up six hours late. She went to the bag to grab her phone, but then she remembered it wasn't her bag. Still, she took Haley's phone and call to hers.
- Hey girl!
- Sorry, I brought your bag by mistake...
- No big deal, we will see each other later, remember?
- Huh... Not really, why?
- What? Well, you're supposed to help me to pick a dress to my party, it's tomorrow, remember?
- Oh! Right! I'm still slow... But sure, I'll be there later.
- Cool. So, has anyone called me yet? Because I must say that I'm pretty mad with Evan. He called you like, a thousand times! Margot answered and yelled at him when we couldn't stand anymore. It's too early to call someone!
Anna laugh.
- Well, I'll call him.
- Yeah... There's anything I need to know about you guys?
- Not really, why?
- Never mind. Gotta go, see you!
- Bye.
She turned off the phone and prepared herself to leave the room. Barbra was outside, eating in the kitchen. When she saw Anna, both of them didn't move for a second. Anna wasn't sure about how she was feeling. To be honest, she had forget about her sister for a moment. She decided to ignore her. Barbra was relieved.
They were eating in silence, it was a heavy energy. Harold had just entered and he felt like walking on eggs.
- Anna, I want to talk to you later.
She nodded a yes. He was afraid to left both girls alone, but he ended up leaving the room.
- Won't you say a thing?
Anna's blood was boiling. She took a deep breath and ignored Barbra. She didn't trusted herself enough to speak with her sister right now.
She continued to eat, and Barbra left the kitchen.
She was feeling quite injured. The only thing that comforted her was knowing that Jenna yell to Anna as much as she did with her. It was impossible not to hear it.
Anna's door was open, and something called Barbra's eye. She prayed for her sister stay there, while she had entered her room and was looking inside her bag.
There was one small cigarette on it, and she didn't care about it, it wasn't something too serious, and... Oh my God, she thought. There was a small plastic with 3 pills inside, two were yellow with a smiling face and one was orange with a crown. Was Anna taking drugs?
For a moment Barbra was worried. Was this something that she do often, or it was because of yesterday? Either way, she thought that the best thing to do was taking this to her mom. Obviously she knew that Anna would be in trouble if she did it, but surprisingly it wasn't her motivation.
Jenna had thrown the pills in front of Anna.
- Explain it.
Her voice was very low, Anna knew that she was really angry. When she realized what she was talking about, she couldn't breath for a moment. Damn it, she thought.
- This isn't mine.
- It was in your bag.
- Why were you looking in there?
- I wasn't it was
Jenna interrupted herself in the middle of the sentence, but it was already too late. Anna couldn't believe this.
- I already said, that's not mine. That's not even my bag, if you open it you'll see.
- So who was it?
- Doesn't matter.
Jenna looked suspicious to her.
- It's one of your friends? Because it doesn't make this better. You can still be using it.
- God! Make a test then! Damn it, I'm tired to keep repeating this crap, for the last time, I DO NOT USE DRUGS!
Anna left looking like a storm. Jenna said:
- Where do you thing you're going?
- Haley's house. Tomorrow it's her birthday party and I'll help her to...
- No you're not.
- What?
Anna raised an eyebrow. Jenna was inflexible. The worst thing about not being graduated yet, was not being able to get a job that afford the price of living by herself. Anna's last job was a year ago, but she had to leave because it was prejudicial to her study. Since then her main focus was to graduate, so she could live her life. If everything works out well, at the end of the year she will have a job, a diploma and she and Haley would be able to share the costs of a rented house.
