Chapter 29: Confession
Itachi skimmed through his geology textbook while he kicked back on the sofa at the Uchiha household. In the middle of his study, a loud shut came from the front door and entered his little brother trudging into the house with a sluggish posture.
"You're back early," he said while lowering his book under his chin. "I thought you were hanging out with Akane."
An immediate toll rang through Sasuke's head when hearing that particular name. His face turned blue as his head dropped in shame, then walked towards the kitchen to look for something to cure his stress.
Itachi watched carefully at his brother with worried eyes and then decided to follow after him. Once he gotten into the kitchen, he spotted Sasuke groaning over the table with his head face down, added with a small gray cloud hovering his neck.
"What's with you?"
"Nothing," the younger Uchiha replied quietly. "Leave me alone."
He gladly ignored his command. "Did something happen with that girl again? What's her face... Mimi?"
"Momo," he corrected. "And no, I mean yeah but it's not about her."
"Then I assume it would be Akane, I bet?" And he knew instantly by the look that Sasuke is sending off the same blue face and lips frowning. "So it is her."
"I didn't say it is!" But Itachi proceeded to imagine the scenario of him and the brunette fighting over something that she could've done. But knowing Sasuke, he can tolerate anything from her.
"Now don't lie to me, brother. You'd always be upset whenever you made Akane cry when you two were kids. You would make that exact face too," he pointed, showing his proof. Then he placed his hands over his hips. "What happened?"
Sasuke slammed his face in his hands and let them raked his black bangs back just by thinking about his angry words to her. "I called her annoying."
"Don't you always?" An immediate glare shot towards his older brother which drove him to raise his hands up in defense.
Sasuke's eyes softened as he sighed drastically with his lips part. "This time is different. I think she took it seriously."
Itachi realized the bag of frozen peas rest over the raven's chin, assuming that the brunette injured him in some way. He heard him mutter an 'ow' with the bag still glued to his face. "Is that her bag I see?"
"She threw it at me." That explained the swollen area on his chin. Instead of questioning the miniature raven who's still sulking over the table, Itachi thought of the rest as a knowing smile spread over his lips.
"What?" Sasuke noticed suspiciously, partially annoyed.

Meanwhile, Akane heard her door bell ring after several minutes of pacing around her room. She thought of calling her best friend in attempt to apologize but for some reason her nerves gotten the best of her motivation.
Speaking of the devil, she sees the Uchiha standing in her doorway with a rueful expression. The sight of his face instantly made her pout angrily.
Sasuke threw his hands up before Akane can start to lecture him. Her mouth closed when her brown orbs found her school bag in one of his hands. She must've forgotten it.
"I want to give this back," he told her gently. She took it from him in ease, now calm and relaxed.
Lured by his kind gesture, the guilt finally sprang to her chest as Akane recapped the moment she threw her bag at him. She can't believe she did that.
"Come on." She felt a slight tug from her hand, spotting the raven dragging her from her house and into the streets. "I want to get you a banana sundae."
"S-Sasuke," forced by his command, Akane made him stop at the middle of the park before he can walk to the stop sign. "Before we do that, I just want to say sorry..."
He turned back with surprised eyes.
"...for trying to force you into something you didn't like. I knew I was pushy and I knew things with Momo gotten a little too far."
Heaving a breath, Sasuke fully faced his body to her and lowered his shoulders with a proud face. The hint of regret expressed emotionally on Akane's image with complete shyness. So he bulked up his chest and pressed his lips together in a brave manner.
"I'm sorry, too," he returned the answer. "I didn't like what I've said, especially to you." Hovering his obsidian eyes to the ground, Akane shook her head and stepped closer to him happily with her arms circling his torso.
"You always say things you don't mean when you're mad," she chuckled. "So it's okay."
Engulfing the usual scent of her hair, Sasuke remained still while the brunette hugged him dearly. The hurt in his chest didn't wash away; not from what happened recently but everything.
"No, it's not," he whispered. "I'm a fool, a complete idiot."
She pulled away slightly with her hands still attached to his lower back, looking at him with wondering eyes. "Why are you saying some weird shit? It's fine!" she cheered.
"You don't understand," then she noticed his face turned away from hers, realizing the expression on his face looked more than just remorseful.
Akane's eyes turned innocent. "What am I not understanding? Come on," she smiled. "Lighten up! We had a few fights before. It's not like it's the first."
"I love you." Then she paused by his abrupt statement. Did she hear him correctly?
"Hah?! Sasu-"
"I love you." This time is more firm which it silenced her. The certain look on his face showed that he's serious. With his hands over her shoulders, Sasuke's dark eyes didn't stir as he pierced her with earnest words. "I'm in love with you, Akane."
Then her world stopped spinning, like it's turned to a whole new leaf - a side she never discovered. Is that possible for him to love her romantically? But the timing...
"You're the reason why I don't want anything to do with Momo," he continued shakily. "It's because of you, I realized there's... something more than just her. So... So I thought, you know..."
He wanted to slap himself. It was obvious that he didn't think this through. How could he confess his feelings so improperly? To try to make his best friend understand his new proclaimed love. He never thought of her response will be, let alone like this.
"Please say something." Her silence is unbearable the more she stared at him with a frozen face.
Finally, she closed her gaping mouth as she retaliated her thoughts. "Sasuke," she began but a dramatic sigh broke out, "I have Arai."
It felt like a tornado arrived and swept his feet off the ground. Again, he forgot. But all the emotions from her attentive eyes, he knew that she was thinking about what to say. Or perhaps, she's trying to figure things out herself as if she's lost.
She was speechless.
"Thank you," was all she said with a small smile, not a fake one but a genuine one. They stared at each other, like they were finding their souls within themselves. That moment felt like hours to Sasuke as his heart beat slowly in anticipation.
Akane smiled again but more sadly as her hand caressed his pale cheek gently. Once she did that, an image of their first kiss reflected in her eyes. So her smile faltered, dropped her hand, and then walked pass him unannounced.
All Sasuke could do is shut his eyes as he felt his mind and body go numb.
