Chapter 30: Closure
The next morning, Akane found herself walking to school in a slow pace; head down and eyes transfixed to the ground. Every since yesterday happened with Sasuke, she didn't get proper sleep that night. All she could think of now is him, sorting out her own thoughts and feelings for him especially.
Is it too awkward to talk to him now?
By the time she arrived through the front entrance of the building, a pink headed girl met her down the hall after Akane exchanged her shoes from her locker. With a warm smile on her face, Sakura waved casually before the two walked together to class.
In the middle of their conversation, Sakura was the one who turned her head first, recognizing a familiar head coming towards their way. Immediately, she glared her green gems at her.
"Oh, Momo! Good morning," Akane greeted like usual. The raven headed girl smiled shyly at her, nodding.
"A-Akane-chan," she came closer. "Good morning. Have you talked to Sasuke-kun yet?"
The brunette returned the smile wryly as the idea of talking about her best friend already started. "I-I did," she began nervously, chuckling. "But... I failed. Whoops."
"Really?"
She nodded, still keeping a happy composure in front the blue eyed beauty. "Yeah, sorry! I guess the duck-butt is a little stubborn than I thought."
But then Momo's disappointed expression turned to hopeful. "Will you try again?" she asked eagerly.
Now the more Akane realized how much she's initiating the subject, she can see why Sasuke broke with her. Momo is out of her mind.
Then again, she thought about her last encounter with Sasuke about him confessing his feelings for her. "Listen, Momo...," Akane's voice lowered in a serious manner, causing Momo to reduce her pestering. "I don't think... Sasuke will ever want to get back with you. He's-"
In the middle of her sentence, she stopped herself from saying any more once she saw a particular head coming into the circle. Sakura and Momo shifted their stare and shocked to see Sasuke looking curious at the three.
His gaze landed on Akane lastly, but she broke off the eye contact in avoidance. Taking this as a response from the brunette, Sasuke glanced down at the ground before entering the classroom, leaving the three girls outside in the hall.
Momo averted her eyes back and forth between Sasuke, who's approaching to his desk, and Akane in wonder. Bewildered, she was smart enough to drop the subject.
"Er, I'll see you later, Akane-chan," in an awkward silence, Momo waved and walked to the direction to her homeroom down the hall.
Sakura rose an eyebrow at the girl beside her, "What's going on?"
"N-Nothing," Akane stifled a laugh gleefully, waving her hands in defense. "Uh, let's just get to class." The pinkette stared at her back, baffled, but followed behind her and watched as the brunette took the seat right next to the raven.
Sasuke glanced from the side of his peripherals, witnessing Akane with her elbow propped up on the desk while her head faced the window, like she was daydreaming.
Are they still friends? Was his confession a little too soon to announce? These questions annoyed the hell out of him.
While the lecture began in class, Sasuke tried to come up with an excuse to get a word out of Akane. At the same time, he felt like he should give her her space for now. He doesn't want to be a Momo.
As painful as it is, he sat through class without trying to get her attention until the hour passed by. The bell rang, signifying their break. He heard the chair pull out next to him, getting him in a panic.
"Akane," he said urgently, grabbing her wrist to stop her from walking out of the room with Sakura. Her brown-filled eyes found his black ones, surprised by the action from him. She remained calm.
"Are...," he gulped. "Are we still best friends?"
Her hesitance killed him. It was like she was trying to figure it out herself. For once, her cheeks grew pink by the sudden touch of his hand brushing her skin.
"I just want you know," Sasuke whispered, "that I'm not giving up just yet. You may be with Arai, but I will always be here. You know that."
Letting go of her wrist, he shoved his hands in his pockets and stormed out of the classroom with his head hang low.
With her eyes falling to the floor, this situation angered Akane. She doesn't know what to do, or how to feel about this.

Later on, Sasuke walked aimlessly through campus and caught himself entering the study room. Luckily, he found the person he wanted to see and that is Momo, sitting by herself by the window with a book in her face.
Huffing a sigh, he has to make this happen once and for all.
Abruptly, a hand slammed on the table in front of her, causing the raven girl to glance up. To her surprise, she was startled to see her ex-boyfriend standing over her with a disturbed face.
"S-Sasuke-kun," she peeped.
"Stop it." Momo's eyes widened. "Whatever you're doing, what you're trying to get at, it's not going to work."
The silence in between them grew, catching her off guard by his straight forward explanation. She didn't even dare to argue with him, frightened of his voice.
"You and I are over," he said gently, trying to remain calm by the looks of her. "Don't bring Akane into this anymore, Momo. This is the end of us, so stop trying to push me around."
"Sasuke..." Looking at the wounds through his eyes, Momo tightened her grip of her skirt as she shrugged her shoulders nervously. "I just wish... for a second chance."
"It's not going to happen," he said lowly, now averting his gaze elsewhere. "You're hurting me, don't you realize that? What we've had, it was something but I just can't handle it anymore. Trust me, I liked you but it's different now. I'm different."
Momo stared intently at him, actually listening to him and his truthful words. It's already been a few days after their break up, and now she's starting to open up her eyes again.
"You don't want me as your boyfriend anymore, I can assure you. So please, stop chasing a fantasy that you'll never have. It's the best for you and for me."
Sasuke felt like that last line is hypocritical. Isn't he chasing a fantasy he's not sure of? If it's even real.
With tears beginning to well up, a soft whimper escaped from her lips. "I love you, Sasuke... I really do."
"I know," he replied carefully, listening to her quiet sobs. "And I'm sorry, I can't give you what you want." Eventually, Momo slowly made a nod after rubbing her eyes with tears running down her cheeks. Finally, after calming herself down, she felt a light pat touching her head and gazed up to see a sweet smile on Sasuke's face.
"Thank you, Momo," he muttered, "for understanding."
This is the first time she witnessed him smiling like that, as if he's happy with her decision. But she knew that he wasn't smiling at her, but smiling at the one and only Akane - the one who made him like this.
As painful as it is, more tears began to swell up in her eyes after realizing how important the brunette is to Sasuke. "I... I wish you luck... with Akane-chan."
If this is how it's going to be, then she should do the same, like how Akane supported her and Sasuke from the beginning.
Noticing her generous thought, the Uchiha smiled even more to hear her hopeful words to him. For once since he knew her, Momo is actually encouraging him - thinking of him now. If only she was like this since the day they started to go out, he would have never broken up with her.
But now he knows that's not possible, because of that kiss made him believe that she's not right for him.
