It's been an entire day since Soonyoung announced that the two of you were dating. A whole day of being stared at on campus, a whole day of whispers and gawking, a whole day you chose to ignore Soonyoung. You knew it was unfair to ghost him after seeing how hard he was trying to contact you. He sent multiple messages over night, tried calling you a handful of times and even tried walking you to school the next morning.
When you saw him standing outside your apartment building waiting for you you finally messaged him, telling him to leave you alone. To which he did. You watched him walk away in disappointment. It broke your heart to do but you were still upset over what happened.
Part of you thought he'd show up to walk with you in between classes as he always did but he didn't. He took your message seriously and didn't appear in front of you once. Truthfully, it made you anxious. You started thinking negatively, wondering if Soonyoung was already over you and your relationship after telling him to leave you alone. Halfway through the day Dokyeom was waiting outside one of your classes to talk to you.
He didn't look pleased. And you had a feeling you knew why. You walked up to him with a small smile but it fell when he spoke.
"So you're dating Soonyoung?" He immediately asked you.
You flattened your lips and looked away before nodding.
"And for a month already? Why did I hear about it from Mingyu and not you?"
"He wasn't supposed to know."
"Yeah? And how long did you think that was going to last?" Dokyeom scoffed.
You flinched at his words. Hearing it from your best friend made the situation sound as ridiculous as it really was. You dipped your head down further in shame. Dokyeom let out a heavy sigh.
"Whatever." He said with attitude. "I'm assuming keeping it a secret was your idea?"
"Yeah." You answered quietly as the two of you began walking down the hall.
Dokyeom clicked his tongue and shook his head in disbelief. His behavior was out of character for him but you couldn't fault his frustration and disappointment in you at all.
"Honestly, I'm surprised Soonyoung even went along with keeping it a secret for this long." Dokyeom mentioned. "Kinda unfair, don't you think?"
"He agreed to it, so yes, what he did was unfair."
Your best friend abruptly halted his steps, making you stop ahead of him. When you turned to look at him his face was darker than it was earlier. You shuddered at his angry expression.
"No, I'm talking about you." His eyebrows furrowed. You opened your mouth to ask why but Dokyeom continued. "Don't you think it's unfair to Soonyoung? With how much he likes you, you made him hide it from his friends?"
"Yeah, but-" you were about to explain yourself but he interrupted you.
"You're so selfish."
"Wait, Dokyeom-"
Before you could say anything else Dokyeom stormed off. There was no denying how hurt your best friend was. Not just because you didn't tell him about the relationship, but how mad he was on Soonyoung's behalf. You stood there silently, unable to move a muscle.
The shame you felt was turning into a heavy guilt almost too unbearable to endure. Tears welled in your eyes, your hands clenched into fists at your sides. The longer you dwelled on it the more Dokeyom's words stung, because they were true. You are being selfish. You were only trying to protect yourself and didn't take Soonyoung's feelings into consideration.
