Chapter 32

Tris' POV

Next day couldn't come sooner. We are now standing in lines, waiting for the gates to open. I am standing right next to Tobias. I already forgave him, I love him so much to stay angry and I have to let him know, because maybe we won't get out of this alive.

- Four - I say, using his nickname because I know there are people listening to our conversation, probably ex-candors.

- Yes? - He asks, surely surprised by my sudden action.

- I love you - I simply say. He stays there frozen, millions of emotions going through his eyes.

- I love you too - He finally answers. I break into a big smile and does too, but nit as big as mine.

- And I forgive you - This causes his small smile turn into a wide one, it almost seems like he is going to hurt his cheeks. He grabs my face in his hands and brings my lips to his in a desperate kiss. I don't care everyone, including my parents, are watching us, I just need him right now.

- Thank you - He mouthes. I just nod and his face goes back to being emotionless. I shake my head in amusement and do the same.

- Ready? - Max yells.

- Yes, sir! - We yell back in answer. Our group being the loudest, but no surprise there considering Uriah and Zeke are with us. In case something happens, Zeke can decode and destroy the simulation, he is as capable as Tobias to do that.

- Let's go!

With that, we march our way out of the haven to the Erudite headquarters at a steady pace, just stopping before making any turn.

We stand in silence, just a few meters away from the front gates, waiting for the signal. Our breaths are heavy and shallow, leaving at display how nervous we really are. I grab Tobias' hand in mine and give him a brief squeeze, then take it back before he can return it. His gaze meets mine, and I find myself drowning in his deep blue eyes. I am soon awaking by the sound of shouts and weapons being fired. Our signal. That means that the group in charge of distracting the erudites is doing ita job.

We run as fast aa we can, occasionally bumping into each other, and burst through the gates, our guns held high in expectation, and we are not dissapointed. As soon as we enter we are welcomed by shots. We run in groups and I helplessly watch as some of my teammates fall and rise affected by the simulation serum. This is way more dangerous, as that are armed with real guns.

We go through the maze that is the erudite compound until we get to the last floor, the one at the bottom, the one where they throw their prisioners to rot there. I feel relieved because we finally got there but it soon deflates when I realize we have no idea in which cell are the leaders in.

- Does anyone of you have any idea where the leaders are? - I voice my thoughts. I scan the room and am greeted by heads that shake in a negative way. They don't know.

- Let's split up - Zeke suggests. Because they prisioners area is so big, we decide to split in groups of two.

We didn't have a lot of people coming, the dauntless girls with childrwn had to stay and take care of them and we couldn't exactly take with us the ones under 16. not even the initiates came. This isn't a simulation, this is real, a real war, and we were losing.

At the end it was me and Zeke and we decide to takes the east aisle.

- Ready? - He asks me with his signature goofy smile. I just nod and give him a small smile of my own. We set off towards the hall and start looking through the small windows on each door.

We do this for a good five minutes but find nothing, just like the other groups. I am starting to freak out because I know the distraction group won't be standing there for much longer, we need to hurry up. I am looking at another door when I hear a scream beside me.

Zeke is laying on the floor and a man is standing at the endo of the hall. He is wearing blue and has his gun pointing at me, but I am faster. I shoot him in the arm, making his gun fall and for him to take off running. I turn to help Zeke but what I find surprises me.

- What are you doing!? -I shout. He is pointing his gun at me, his eyes void of emotion, void of life. He is under a simulation, and he won't stop until I'm dead. Realising that I rush to the nearest turn and round the corner just as he fires, the bullet landing just a few centimeters away from where my head had been seconds ago. I keep running trying to avoid him but he is fast.

I keep doing that for another minute until I slip. I curse under my breath and stand up quickly, but It isn't fast enough for his next bullet pierces through my left thigh, making me fall and scream in pain. I drag myself around the corner and pray for Tobias to come an help me.

- Four!!! - I call, desperate. Zeke rounds the corner and stands in front of me. He position his gun in front me and puts his finger over the trigger. I just close my eyes and wait...but nothing happens.

I hear something drop and open my eyes to find Zeke's gun on the floor. He is looking at his surroundings with a confused expression on his face. When his eyes land on me, they widen and his jaw drops.

- Oh my God - He gasps - what did I do!? - He asks, horrified.

I open my mouth to tell him that it wasn't his fault but suddenly I feel weak. Now that the adrenaline in my system worn off I feel an excruciating pain on my left thigh. I my gaze falls upon it and I am greeted by the sight of my leg over a puddle of crimson, my blood, a lot.

My head falls and my eyes roll back.

- Don't! - Zeke shouts, kneeling beside me, staining his pants with my blood in the process, but he doesn't seem to mind - Don't you dare die on me!

I try to nod but I can't. I have lost a lot of blood and unless someone stops the hemorrhage, I am going to die and leave Tobias alone. But at least, he stopped the simulation just on time.

My eyes begin to unfocus and I am faintly aware of Zeke's belt on my thigh acting as a tourniquet.

- Please, Tris - He pleads, desperation laced in his voice - just hang on for little bit more, help is on the way.

I open my eyes, I didn't realise I had closed them, and give him a brief nod. Then I can't take it any longer, the darkness is too heavy for me to resists, it pushes me down.

The last thing I see is Tobias' desperate face as he runs through the hall towards me. Then everything dissappears.
