Chapter 38
Tris' POV
- What the hell is going on here? - Tobias spits through gritted teeth. It would have been less scary If he had shouted but instead, he just spoke in a low, dangerous voice.
- I..- I stop because, I realise, I don't even knoe what's going on. I just entered the apartment to find Caleb sitting on the couch hunched over.
- Tobias - Caleb says. Tobias' eyes widen and his gaze snaps towards me. My eyes widen too and I look open mouthed at Caleb. How does he know? I didn't tell him. But Tobias thinks otherwise.
- You told him!! - He exclaims, indignation and betrayal tainted in his voice, his face raw red.
- No! - I hurriedly say, but he doesn't seem to believe me because he shakes his head and points at the door.
- I want you out - He says, emotionless voice and his face void of life. This gesture breaks my heart but I tell myself that this will all be fixed soon.
- Tobias, it is not what...
- OUT!! - He yells and I jump in fear. I know I cannot reason with him right now, as he has beeb drinking (he has a beer can in his hand that I failed to see before), so I grab Caleb's hand and help him up. This seems to anger Tobias more but I pay no notice and quickly leave the room, cringing at the sound of the door slamimg shut behind us.
I keep walking, Caleb trailing behind. We arrive to our destination, my old apartment, the one I left just a few days ago. I open the door and let Caleb in first. I go next, closing the door behind me, locking it in the process.
Caleb is standing in the middle of the room. At first I think that he is deep in thought but I see his stared fixed on the words on my wall.
- What is this, Beatrice? - He finally looks at me but I avoid his gaze, suddenly I find the couch really interesting, we could use this one at Tobias and I apartment instead of his ugly one, even though we had an amazing afternoon there... - Beatrice!
I snap out of my pleasent memory just to find Caleb sitting on the couch, staring at me with that gleam of curiosity in his eyes that characterize the erudites and sometimes myself, as I have been told by Tobias. I take a seat next to Caleb and grab his hands in mine.
- Now tell me, what's wrong? - At this, his expression changes, he frowns and his face darkens. With a sigh he looks at me in the eye and says three words that make my insides shatter into pieces.
- Mom is dead.
It takes me a minute or two to actually comorehend what he just said, an even when I do, I stay silent, not knowing what to say or how to react.
- What? - I whisper, finally finding ny voice bur barely. My mind resembles a white wall, blank and without any color to make it stand out, just a plain white wall, there isn't dirt but it starts crumbling, caving in. Just like my soul.
- I'm so sorry - Caleb cries, a few tears slipping down his face but he doesn't bother to wipe them off and I pay them no mind. I just nod, aknowledge his words but I am too gone to answer.
Suddenly, realisation comes crashing onto me and I let out a loud, desperate cry, making Caleb jump, but he quickly composes himself and wraps me tight in his arms, and I never want him to let go.
