SERRINA
When I woke up, my eyes felt sealed shut from crying all night. It had become a normal occasion for me to cry before or in bed and in the last few nights, I hadn't gotten much sleep either. My nights were more spent tossing and turning than they were sleeping and it was getting to me. The kids had been taken to school by Pattie, who had stepped in a little with Justin absence and Amelia was sleeping in the bed beside me.
I reached over to her and brushed a hair out of her face. She looked a lot like her father, the only difference being her pretty hazel eyes. Otherwise, she had the same, stick straight brown hair and full lips. Her tiny nose had the same structure to his but with a feminine twist.
"Milly," I whispered and as I opened my mouth to say something else my phone began to buzz on the side table beside me. I rolled over slowly, cautious not to wake her up and looked at the cell.
Ashley: SOS. NOW.
My heart began to race. The most recent time she had sent me an SOS was when Oliver had fallen and shattered his leg in hockey. She needed me to come for emotional support. I had sat at the hospital for 16 hours straight while they did surgery on Oliver's leg to reconstruct the bones it contained
Which was why my heart leaped into my chest and I jumped out of my bed. Amelia sat up beside me and I pulled the blankets off her, doing my best to look calm with her, "Honey, I need you to go get your shoes and jacket on, okay?"
She yawned and rubbed her eyes, "Why, mommy? Are we going somewhere?"
I nodded and pulled my pyjamas off, changing in front of her to speed up our timing, "Yeah, honey. We're gonna go see Aunty Ashley."
She smiled and climbed out of the bed. Sometimes I thought she loved Ashley more than she loved me, but it didn't really matter. It made me grateful for Ashley and everything she did for us.
It took me 5 minutes to get dressed and another 5 to get myself and Amelia into my car. I noticed that Justin's car was still not here and wondered how long he had been gone for. I can't remember the last time I saw him.
Another text from Ashley buzzed in my pocket as I started my car.
Ashley: I need you.
I took a deep breath and quickly replied.
Me: On my way. 10 minutes.
I put the car into reverse and drove as fast as possible while still being safe. By the time we pulled up Ashely and Chaz's driveway, Amelia was wide awake and singing something I didn't know.
"Come on, sweetie," I said as I unbuckled myself. I heard hers click and she pushed herself up and pushed her door open. Once we were both out we made our way up the driveway and the door swung open before I could knock.
Ashley's hair was a mess and her makeup wasn't done, something that didn't happen often. She looked like she was in pain and was clutching her stomach, "I need to go to the hospital."
I felt Amelia reach up and hold my hand as I processed what was happening, "What? Now?" I looked for Chaz's car and found nothing, "Where's Chaz?"
"I don't know," Her voice was shaky and she pushed past me, taking Amelia's hand and leading her back to the car, "I'm having contractions every 2 minutes and they're lasting just as long." She ushered Amelia back into the car and turned to me, "He isn't answering and I need to be at the hospital."
I nodded and did my best to calm my racing heart, "Okay."

Ashley waddled through the emergency room just before I did and Amelia clung onto my back. I had lifted her up and held her there so we could move faster and she had thought we were playing, so she didn't mind.
A blonde nurse who looked like she ate an almond and a half per day saw us and walked over, "Can I get you a wheelchair?"
Ashley was quickly replying, "No, I'm fine."
I cut her back off and looked at the nurse, "Yes please." The blonde nodded and scurried off to find us one.
That was when Ashley turned to me and gave me the most horrified look I had ever seen, "I can't do this."
I frowned and shook my head, "Of course you can." The nurse was back with a wheelchair and I pushed Ashley down into it, "You've done this before and you'll probably do it again."
"No," she was gasping for air and gripping tightly to her belly, "I'm not ready. Chaz is ready but I'm not. I can't have another baby."
I stepped in front of the wheelchair and dropped Amelia off my back. As I crouched I front of her she began to pant, "You can do this Ashley. I'm here. You're ready."
She began to nod as a new nurse, this time a pretty brunette, walked up to us and smiled like an idiot, "Are we having a baby today?"
Something snapped in Ashley's head and she whipped her head to look at the girl, "No, brain aneurysm." Then she looked back at me, "Take me home." I opened my mouth to speak and Ashley let out a loud groan. She gripped at her legs and looked at me, "Oh, god." I saw tears growing in her eyes and she began to cry, "Get Chaz here."
I nodded and the nurse began to rush us up to maternity.

"Hey. You've reached Chaz. Leave a message and I'll get back to you."
I rolled my eyes as the answering machine beeped, "Jesus, Chaz. You need to be here. Where are you?"
It had been 3 hours and over 5 phone calls later, Chaz had still not answered his phone, sent a text, or told us where he was. Ashley's labour was progressing slowly, but she was almost completely dilated so he needed to get here and, preferably, fast.
I bit my lip as she squeezed my hand, doing her best to breathe through an intense contraction. She was panting through the pain, doing her best not to horrify Amelia, who was still waiting with me because Justin wasn't answering his phone either.
Meghan had been in an out checking on out her patients as she went. Ashley had begged her to wait as long as possible for Chaz to show up, but that option was quickly disappearing.
Ashley grunted and her eyes went wide, "Get Meghan. I think he's coming."
My heart began to race and I let go of her hand darting to the door and holdin. My head out. Meghan was, thankfully, standing in the hall so all I had to do was call her name and she came running. After a quick check, she confirmed Ashely's assumption and said the baby was crowning, meaning his head was visible from the outside.
I looked around for Justin on reflex, needing him to be here to watch Amelia. A nurse noticed and took her, promising to show her the cool toys they had at the nurses station. I went back to Ashley's side and she gripped at my hand as she gave birth, alone, but not alone all at the same time.

The room doors burst open and Chaz bolted in, quickly followed by Justin. I could see the panicked look on both of their faces as I glance up from the baby I was cradling in my arms. Ashley and Amelia had fallen asleep on the bed and when the baby, named Greyson, began to squirm, I took over, knowing she needed to sleep.
"I missed it?" Chaz whispered, practically sprinting over to me to see his son.
If looks could kill, I would have stabbed him, buried him, dug him back up and stabbed him again, "Almost 4 hours ago."
As he took the tiny baby from my arms I looked over at Justin, who was sheepishly standing in the doorway, "Are you coming home?"
He looked terrified of me, and he should have been, "Yeah," he barely whispered.
"Then wake up your daughter. We should go."
He scurried around to pick up Amelia and then followed me as I left Ashley and Chaz to finally welcome their newest member as a family.
