Serrina

I woke up to the taste of blood in my mouth.

My whole body hurt.

My head hurt.

It was hard to breathe.

Jasper wasn't moving.

I couldn't feel my legs.

I looked around the car and realized that I was upside down and dangling from what used to be the floor but was now acting as a ceiling. The roof was still above my head but it was on the cement road and dented beyond any kind of repair.

I opened my mouth to call for help but nothing came from my lips. My throat felt like I had swallowed glass. My chest burned.

Through the passenger side door I could see a truck, large and bright blue but both headlights were smashed. Otherwise it looked fine. A man had stumbled out of it and fallen to his knees before staring at my car for a few seconds and then bending over and vomiting. I could see from where I was that he was sobbing.

I felt the pain from earlier coming back and tried to reach for my stomach but my hands were dangling above my head and felt so heavy... Everything in my body was screaming at me to stay still so I listened and tried my voice again.

"Hel..." I let out a small whimper as my lungs gave up on the words and left me immediately winded. Tears were pouring down my face and panic filled my brain.

And then I felt it.

At first it was a little dribble but the dribble quickly turned into a peeing sensation and I knew what had just happened.

My water broke.

No. Its too early.

I tried calling for help again, but, like the last time, my lungs gave up on me and left me panting for air.

I felt the first contraction and it amazed me at how strong it was. The pain in my back was suddenly gone but my feet had gone completely numb. I couldn't move my toes. I closed my eyes, sobbing and finally heard the first siren. It was far away but it had to be coming here. It had to on its way to save me.

The contraction was over quickly but once it was done the pain returned to my back and I finally managed to scream. It wasn't much, but it was enough for people to run towards me.

Just before I blacked out I saw a woman bending over and looking int my car and then heard somebody start to cry, "Oh, god. She's pregnant." Then everything went black.

******

The loud grinding noise was probably what made me come to. I noticed my neck was stabilized by some sort of brace and a man was lying on the ground beside my door, leaning on his elbow like we were about to have a casual conversation. I couldn't move my head but my eyes darted around and saw the colourful flashing lights and people running around my destroyed car.

"M'am?" I heard the man say. I looked over at him and he put an oxygen mask on my mouth, wrapping the elastic band around my head, "You've been in an accident. We're going to get you out of here, okay?"

I nodded my head and took a deep breath of the cool air that was being blown into my lungs. The burning in my chest subsided and I finally found my voice, "I can't feel my legs." My voice was rough and crackly, but my words were clear. He nodded and turned to shout something. A few other people shifted in closer to me, doing something with the car.

"How far along are you?" He said, bending back over and turning back to me.

"Justin." I gasped. My lungs were back to burning. One word responses were all I could manage, "Justin," I gasped again and suddenly I couldn't see. Tears filled my eyes so much that I couldn't make out anything except fuzzy images.

He looked at me with the most sincere look I had ever seen and nodded, "We'll call your family." He reached into the car and took my hand. I could feel his touch, "We're going to focus on getting you out. We're doing everything we can to save you and this baby, okay?"

I squeezed my eyes shut and nodded as best as I could, "Baby," I gasped, "Him first." And I stared at him. He must have had kids because his eyes were full of tears and he nodded.

"Stay with me, okay?" The man reached across my chest and started working on something in the car.

Then a pain shot through my spine and I felt my whole body go rigid. My abdomen tightened, my chest contracted. I couldn't breathe. I was having another contraction. Jasper was coming.

I screamed, then blacked out.

******

It was too bright. Everything was blinding. I couldn't see. I couldn't breathe. I couldn't talk. I couldn't move. I was numb.

I couldn't do anything.

Then I felt everything at once.

A hand touched my arm and I snapped out of my dream state.

"Serrina?" I blinked a few times and then I saw the paramedic again. He was standing over me with messes of wires and tubes tangled in his hands.

I opened my mouth to speak and let out a deep breath and instantly began wheezing. The paramedic put the oxygen mask back on my face and told me to breathe. My chest felt like somebody had punched me in the sternum.

"Take your time." He placed his hand on my shoulder and I looked down as a few other men worked around my body, working to stabilize me. I still couldn't feel my legs. "My name is Liam."

I looked up at him, Liam, and lifted my hand to take the mask off my face, "Jasper," I moved my other hand down to my belly and then let the mask go, reaching up and holding Liam's hand. He didn't seem to mind and even gave me a small squeeze of reassurance.

"We're getting a monitor hooked up right now." As he said that a loud beeping started ringing in my ears and my chest got tight. I couldn't breathe in, "Okay, Serrina," He began shuffling around in the tiny cabinet for something and came out with a few things, "I'm going to have to make an airway for you, okay? Yours is closing up."

I hadn't noticed that I was gagging and choking until he had said that and then it was all I could focus on. A contraction started and made my breathing problem worse.

And before he could do anything else another loud beeping.

I heard another man call, "The baby's in distress. We need to do something now."

I tried to take slow deep breaths but I couldn't. My whole body was shaking in pain and fear.

And then Liam looked at me again and moved in to do something. I closed my eyes and shook my head.

"Him." I gasped with the little amount of air I had left, hoping he would understand. He stared at me in awe and I added, "Baby,"

"You want us to save the baby? We can save you both." He was frowning. I knew it was his jobs to save as many lives as possible, but my son had more to look forward to than me. He needed to be safe first.

I shook my head and a tear fell down my cheek, "My baby."

He thought for a second and then sighed "Okay," He gasped, "How far along are you?" I pulled my hand out of his and held up 3 fingers. I knew my voice wouldn't work anymore, I want getting enough air. He looked down at my hand then back up at my face, "30?" I tapped his palm and lowered one finger, showing him 2, "32. You're 32 weeks?"

I nodded and grabbed his hand again. I felt another gush between my legs and looked down at the two men. One of them was working on my belly and then other was doing something with the cords. The one at my belly froze and looked at the other 2 medics, "She's bleeding."

Liam looked down at me as my vision became blurry, "Focus on breathing. Try to take deep breaths." Then he looked towards the driver and I saw the fear enter his eyes too, "We are losing them! Go faster!"

And as my brain stopped working I felt the fear disappear and my last thought was of my family.

I hope they'll be okay if I die.
