SERRINA

~ 24 Weeks Pregnant ~

I couldn't keep the smile off my face as we pulled into Meghans office's parking lot. The kids were all in the backseat, talking nonstop about the baby. I had mentioned the ultrasound and they all insisted on coming, thus, we all packed ourselves into the car and drove half an hour to Meghans office. I glanced over my shoulder and smiled at the kids who were all chatting like hey had just been given a new puppy.

Connor reached across the front seat and placed his hand on my thigh, and action that could've been sexual if he weren't 110% gay and I was 110% pregnant or married. I moved my gaze from my kids rot him and he smiled, "We're here."

I sighed and took my seatbelt off, "Alright, kids. Let's go."

They all let out little cheers before unbuckling their seatbelts and assisting Amelia out of her carseat. She was still too petite to move to a booster seat, but she didn't seem to care that much. It had always made her feel special. I followed their actions and unbuckled myself too. Connor did the same and we all climbed out of the car.

The kids were racing to open the office door, the twins letting Amelia win, and she swung the door open. The weight was almost too much, but she managed to pull hard enough with her brothers help and the door flew open. They all ran in but slowed down once they hit the carpet.

Meghan was standing in the foyer, something that she always managed. Im not sure how she does it. She's always booked up and its near impossible to get an appointment without a week or two in advance, but she's always waiting for me in the front of her office.

"Good morning Bieber clan." She looked exhausted but she was smiling like normal. She was holding her stomach gently, "Is everybody joining us for the ultrasound today?"

I rubbed Braxton's hair and it fanned across his forehead, "I think thats the plan, right kids?"

"Yes!" Amelia practically shouted. I flinched a little and then laughed.

Meghan smiled and let out a long sigh, she looked like she wanted to puke, "Lets get started. Follow me family."

She led us into a room that I had never been in before. It was probably twice the size of the typical room and I could only assume that she saved this room for when people brought their whole families. So, in this case, us. Meghan told the kids to sit in the chair along one wall while I slid onto the bed. Connor stood beside me and Meghan took her usual spot on the small stool.

"Have you guys seen the baby before?" Meghan was talking to the kids as she prepped the machine and gel.

"Mommy showed us pictures." Amelia piped up, "I couldn't see it though. It was just a blob."

"That blob is your sister," I told her and saw a grin appear on her face. Meghan laughed and tapped my hip, her sign for me to roll my shirt up. I glanced up at her and saw that she wasn't smiling. She looked deep in thought.

While the kids were all chatting with each other I reached out and touched her arm, "You okay?"

She gave me a look that suggested she didn't want to talk but she opened her mouth and spoke anyways, "Im pregnant." Her voice was barely a whisper and she took a deep breath, her eyes watering up, "But he's sick. Type 2, Osteogenesis imperfecta. Wont make it full term."

"Oh my god. Meghan." I sat up on the table and reached out to hug her, "Do you want to talk?"

She shrugged and gave me a weak hug back, "Its all pretty sudden. Not a lot to talk about."

"There's nothing you can do?" I moved away and bit my lip, "Medication?"

She shook her head, "no." Then she replaced her almost tear stained face with a fake smile, "Enough about me. Today was supposed to be about you, so let see that baby of yours. Shall we?"

It broke my heart. I wanted to talk to her about it. She was my friend, or at least, that how I saw her. But she had no interest in talking about herself. She was here to do her job, so I laid back down and pulled my shirt back up.

My exchange with Meghan had gone unnoticed by the kids, all of whom were still talking about the baby when Meghan squirted the mostly clear gel onto my stomach.

As soon as the little wand touched my skin, Meghan moved her hand to a switch, hesitating for only a second before flicking it and sighing, "The heartbeat." I watched tears fill Meghans eyes as she heard the pulsing.

A faint thumping filled the room and the kids all jumped from their seats, surrounding the bed to get a better look at their little sister on the screen.

"Is that her?" Braxton asked and pointed at the little shape on the screen, "Thats Octavia?"

Just as I opened my mouth to tell him that, yes, it is, Meghan cut me off, "Octavia?"

Braxton's face lit up at the mention of the name and the confusion on Meghans face had me concerned, "Yeah. Me and Mom came up with the name. Isn't it pretty?"

She made an odd face and frown a little, "Yeah. Its very pretty, but you guys might have to brainstorm again." She shrugged a little, pressed a button on the machine that made the picture pause and then pointed at a little protrusion on the screen, "You're having a boy."

The sound in the room toned down and the hysteria that broke out sounded like I was under water. Braxton was asking a million questions, his face destroyed at the idea that it was a boy. Amelia was confused. She kept asking if we were going to have a boy and girl baby and Krystal was doing her best, in her confused state to explain what was happening.

Connors voice drew me out of my daze, "The woman you recommended told us it was a girl." He was pissed, but he was doing a damn good job of hiding it, "She assured us it was a girl."

"Even I get it wrong sometimes." She sighed and I could see that she was completely back in doctor mode, "This freeze frame is proof that its a boy though, so no more surprises." Then her eyes connected with mine, "You have a happy and healthy baby growing inside you. Try and move past this and be happy. Not everybody is as lucky a you are."

She handed me a soft blue piece of paper towel and pressed a few buttons on her machine. The kids were quiet now, watching fascinated at our interaction.

"You can clean yourself up. I'll leave the photos at the front desk." Then she gave me a weak smile and I saw her lip quiver, "I'll see you again in 2 weeks."

And before I could respond, she was walking out of the room, her shoulders shaking as the door clicked shut behind her. I began to wipe off my stomach and felt ashamed.

After all, Justin had wanted a boy. I should be happy. At least my absent, loving, sort of interested husband was getting what he wanted.
