SERRINA
~ 14 Weeks Pregnant ~
I checked my phone screen again and then rolled my eyes, pushing open my car door and slamming it behind me. I placed a delicate hand on my stomach and felt the bump that had started to form, bracing myself for the appointment that awaited me. I dragged my feet as I walked into the clinic and smiled at the receptionist behind the desk regardless of how I felt.
"Hi, I'm Serrina. I have an appointment for an ultrasound." My voice sounded happy and the girl smiled at me.
She nodded and began typing on her computer before looking up at me, "Dr. Smith is just finishing with her last client. She'll be out in a few minutes to take you back."
"Smith?" I shook my head, "My appointment was with Meghan."
"Meghan is out of town on personal business. Lilly Smith is her fill in for the week." She must have seen my uneasiness because she smiled, "Doctor Smith is a very good doctor but if you'd like to reschedule we can."
"No, that's fine," It has to be today. "Thank you." I nodded and went to sit in the waiting area. Immediately, I looked at my phone and shook my head at the lack of texts. I opened up my conversations and found Justin's name. As quickly as I could manage, I sent him a message.
You coming? I'm here.
He had never elaborated on the breakfast plans that he had been excitedly talking about, so instead, I assumed he'd meet me here. I was beginning to realize that I had been wrong.
I watched and quietly bit my cheek watching for a response although none came.
"Serrina?" I looked up and realized I had been fuming for a few minutes. An older lady was standing in the hallway. She had a short bob that was a mix of grey and white and her green eyes was staring at me with a massive grin, "I can take you in now." As I stood up she continued to talk, "How are you? I can see by your chart that it's been a while since you were in last."
I nodded and caught up to her, "Yeah, it's odd being back." She stepped forward and placed a gentle hand on the middle of my back, leading me into a small back room.
"Where's your husband?" I couldn't tell if she was being judgy or just curious, but if she was working here she knew about the patient confidentiality and she knew who my husband was.
"He's working." I replied. I didn't know this woman and she didn't know me well enough to make more than casual small talk.
"What's he doing for work?"
"Sorry," I began, "But I'd really rather not talk about my husband."
She didn't seem offended and nodded, quickly changing the subject and I slid into the exam table, "So how far along do you think you are?"
"Close to 15 weeks." I told her and saw her eyes widen a little. I laughed, "We were trying a few months ago and, after an endless number of negative tests, we decided to give up. A week ago a friend of mine asked how far along I was. I hadn't even thought it was possible until then."
She frowned at me and began prepping me and the machine, "So this baby was sort of but not really planned?" She gave me a sideways smile and I knew she was being friendly.
"Yeah," I shrugged, "I mean... We were trying, but then he started working right after I got pregnant, and like I said, I didn't know until last week." I looked at her with a long stare as she typed some things into her computer, "We're..." I took a few seconds to think of the right words. Excited? Happy? He didn't seem to be either of those things, but I couldn't decide on a good word, so I lied, "We're ready."
She nodded and gave me a genuine smile, "That's good." I rolled up my shirt before she had to ask and her eyes widened at the sight of my already bulging stomach. As she grabbed the tube of jelly and prepared me for the ultrasound, she began talking again, "You weren't joking about the 15 weeks. Sometimes I get patients who say they're that far along when they're only 5-10 weeks." She looked at me with a little concern," Any complications so far?"
I shrugged, "No, if not for my growing gut I would have no idea I was pregnant." I smiled and let out a small laugh. "It wasn't until I took that stupid home test that I started to feel any kind of morning sickness."
She laughed, nodded and pressed the wand to my skin, instantly filling the room with a loud, yet soft, whooshing sound. A heartbeat. My eyes teared up as I looked over at the screen, widening at the sight I found.
The image was in black and white but I could easily see the head and body. It's head was on the right side of the monitor and I could see two hands. Each hand had 5 fingers and I could count all of... his or her toes.
"Wow," I gasped and shook my head, "That's a baby."
Doctor Smith laughed, "Yeah," She adjusted the wand a few times and poured out different things, the baby's nose, it's hand waving at us, even pointed out that the baby was sucking it's thumb, then she turned to me and smiled, "I'm going to say you're 14 weeks. Do you want to know the gender?" I hesitated but then nodded. She went back to work at looking and found a bunch of angles before pressing a button and pausing the image. She looked at me with a frown then back to the picture, "It's a little difficult with this one." She squinted, as if it would make it easier to see the gender, "I'm going to say it's a girl."
I covered my mouth to hold in a small sob and had to close my eyes to keep my tears from falling. If everything happening right now, there was only one thing on my mind:
I really wished Justin was here with me.
******
As I pulled into the driveway I stared down at my tiny bump. It was mostly hidden by my loose clothes, but the way I was sitting made it look obvious. The car was idling and I realized that I hadn't listened to music the entire way home. I had been to lost in my own thoughts to even notice.
14 weeks...
A girl...
Justin had no clue...
And I was so mad at him.
Every time I thought about it my eyes teared up and my body shook with anger. When my phone began buzzing in my back pocket I almost didn't care enough to answer it but I decided that I needed to in case it was about my kids.
Instead the sick feeling in my stomach was amplified by the sight of Justin's name.
Justin: Hey, what's going on? Everything okay?
I bit my cheek hard enough to taste blood then opened the messaging app to reply.
Call me ASAP
I only had to wait a few seconds before my phone began ringing and Justin's name popped up. It took me a few seconds of hesitation before I allowed myself to answer the call, "You missed it."
There was a few seconds of silence on the phone before I heard a little gasp, "The doctors." It was hard to tell if he was being genuine or if he was just trying to cover his errors.
"Yeah," I bit my cheek so hard I could taste blood, "14 weeks." I spat at him and dug my nails into my palms, "And it's a girl."
He laughed, "Are you serious?" His voice was filled with joy and it made me even angrier, "Serrina, that's amazing."
"Shut up," as badly as I wanted to hold back my rage I didn't have the energy, "You promised me you'd be there and you didn't show up. Where even were you?"
He didn't have anything to say in response so he tried to calm me down instead, "Serrina, I'm sorry. I forgot. Work has been so busy lately and-"
I cut him off, "You know what, this is ridiculous." I shook my head and held my screams in, "I'm not doing this over the phone so if you want to fix your mistakes you need to come talk to me face to face."
I didn't wait for him to respond before ending the call. After taking a few deep breaths and shaking my hands out, I shoved my hands into my pocket and walked into my house.
