Religion. It's a big part of you. Some would say that religion is basically who you are.

// Song: Welcome To New York by Taylor Swift //
💮💮💮
New York is bloody amazing and I haven't even officially entered it yet. As we drive out of Holland Tunnel and I first set my eyes on the city's infamous skyline, my breath is literally taken away.
"Whoa," Scarlet says and I nod in agreement.
Whoa.
We drive into Manhattan and I can't help but feel crushed underneath the enormity of it all. New York, NYU, all on my own. I'll have Scarlet of course but its just not the same as having home with me, having my mother.
Speaking of whom, I promised to call her as soon as I reached so I take my phone out and she picks up on the first ring.
"Amira!-" she exclaims.
"Mother, I called to tell you-"
"What is this I'm hearing?" I am cut short.
"What?" I'm confused.
"You spent the night at some dingy motel with Zayn?"
All breath escapes me, she's gonna force me to go back, I know it.
"Yes- I mean no, it wasn't like that-"
"Alright, Mrs. Mulfar was telling me and I couldn't quite believe her. I'm proud of you Amira, you're finally coming out of your shell,"
Of course. It was too much to ask for my mother to actually act like my mother for a change.
"You're not mad?" I ask.
"Of course not," she chides. "Why would I be mad?"
"I spent the night with boys, why wouldn'tyou be mad?"
"Boys? What do you mean boys?"
"It wasn't just Zayn," I tell her, hoping to get some sort of reaction from her, some abhorrence- anything. "His brother and his friends were there too, I spent the night in my own room though-"
"Oh right, Mrs . Mulfar mentioned their little trip all across the US before college started. Did you and Zayn talk?"
"Yes," I say through gritted teeth, "We had a lovely chat about our beautiful future," she obviously doesn't notice the sarcastic tone because she hums in appreciation.
Dropping the whole Zayn thing, I tell her I've reached New York, she tells me she doesn't approve of Scarlet's driving, I assure her Scarlet is a great driver, she doesn't approve of Scarlet in general, I stop talking and she eventually gives up and tells me to call her tomorrow, I hang up.
"What the hell is wrong with her? She goes on and on about our religion and her duties as a Muslim mother and she thinks it's okay for me to spend the night with Zayn, who I'm not even married to," I vent to Scarlet.
