Harry -
I punched as fast and hard as I could. Over and over. Trying to get her out of my head. I had to forget.
I'd run away from her last night, as painful as it was for me to. She looked so heartbroken, and my own heart broke, turning away from her.
"Why don't you take a break, Harry? You're not focused." Louis, my beta spoke up from his standing nearby, watching me throw punches for "training".
I hadn't slept at all last night, my mind and my wolf, too restless to sleep. Her icy blue eyes kept staring at me with that heartbroken expression and I heard her sad whines no matter what I did. And when the sun returned, I called Louis and went down to the training grounds.
I took my gloves off and sat down on the nearby bench as Louis walked over to me. His arms crossed over his chest, and him looking down at me with his "knowing" look.
"What?" I snapped, wondering why he was looking at me like a father who knows what's bothering their child, though they won't say.
"You're trying to forget something, Harry. You didn't come down here to train." He replied, and sat beside me.
"Oh, you know that, do you?" I sarcastically snapped back at him. My mind was still screaming everything about that wolf. My mate. My mate I'd turned away from.
"I do. If you were training, you wouldn't be throwing those wild punches. You'd be focused and you'd do it the right way. Not the crazy way." He continued to look over at me as I grabbed my water bottle and struggled to unscrew the dumb cap.
"What happened last night?" He suddenly asked. And I froze my motions.
"Who said anything happened last night?" Why does he always know everything? Why can't he be one of those Betas who aren't smarter than their Alpha. Maybe I just need a Beta who's younger than me?
"I know you haven't slept. You're down here trying to forget. You're frustrated about something. And you weren't like this yesterday, so...what happened last night?"
I found my mate, and ran away from her.
"Nothing." I lied.
"Something did." He persisted.
"Nothing happened last night." I growled and got up from the bench.
"Harry, I'm your Beta, I know when something has happened and you-"
"Leave it alone, will you?!" I shouted and headed back for the packhouse.
Still in my workout gear, I stormed into my office and sat down behind my desk, hoping my bothersome Beta wouldn't follow me.
Very bothersome Beta.
"I just want to make sure nothing is wrong." Louis explained.
I rolled my chair around so I was facing the wall, hoping louis would take a hint and leave. When the room fell deadly silent, I thought maybe he'd left.
I turned back around to see him still here, looking through the calendar.
"Your rut is in a week." He looked up from the numbered papers, and gave me a sympathetic look.
I shrugged my shoulders and pulled my shirt over my head. Training really warms you up, you know.
"You know it would do you good to take a look around at some other packs. Maybe find your mate to help you through your ruts." Louis oh-so-wisely began to advise. Louis has it easy, he found his mate when he was 18. I'm 20, and I wish I'd never found mine.
But the mention of "my mate" brought back last night. Her white and tan fur blowing softly in the breeze. I'd never seen a wolf with such an unusual coat pattern. It was so unique and beautiful. I could only imagine how beautiful she is as a woman, as opposed to her wolf.
"Harry? Hello?" Louis waved his hands in front of my face. Snapping me out of my trance.
"What?!" I growled.
"You were out of it. You okay? Maybe you're going into your rut early?" I rolled my eyes at the thought.
"Now, like I was saying, you need to try looking at some other packs-"
"What for? Why now?" I asked, leaning back into my chair, now shirtless.
"To help you through your ruts, for one thing." Louis all but snapped.
"What do you think girls like Shilo are for?" I asked, and immediately saw the frown on Louis' face.
"You using her to get through your ruts isn't what you need. You need someone who cares and loves you. Not someone who...just gives you what you want."
"She gets me through my ruts. That's all I care about." I point out to him.
"Yeah. You and nearly every other unmated male. And a few who are mated." He scoffs and sits down in his chair at his desk. Putting his feet up on the desk and leaning back into the chair, glancing around the office.
"Who's mated and goes to her?" I ask, looking over at him.
"I'm just saying, she's that kind of woman, Harry." He sighs loudly and puts his feet back on the floor and sits up in his chair like it's made for you to do.
I nod my head in fake understanding and open the drawer in my desk that holds the alcohol.
"What're you doing?" Louis asks from his desk across the room as I place the bottle of whiskey in my desk.
"Trying to forget."
