Gabriel's POV

I heard her whimper. It was just a whimper, but somehow, I heard it. I was about a mile away, in the castle, but I could hear her. Not just hear her voice, but her soft, gentle whimper.

I was worried about her. I hated her presence, but I was, for some reason, worried about the carefree, innocent girl. She disappeared for more than an hour, and the ball had started ten minutes ago. I was storming around the castle, slamming open doors, in attempts to look for her. I was about to call in a few scouts.

She's probably felt betrayed seeing Vern kissing me. Who knew she would sneak into my room and try to seduce me? I knew it looked bad, seeing your own mate lip-locked with another girl, but it wasn't what it looked like.

Vern is my ex. I came out of the shower this morning, dressed for the ball, to see her sitting on my bed. She refused to leave and while I was getting ready to call the guards, Adeline opened the door. Seeing Adeline, Vern acted fast, pulling me close and kissing me. She's now sitting in the dungeons.

Adeline distanced herself away from me, but I knew she needed help when I caught onto the gentle whimper. Mea amica.

I slammed the door in front of me with anger, before running out the back doors of the castle. How was I not able to catch her scent before? I trailed in the direction that the almost silent vibrations of her voice had come from. I was running quite fast. Vampires were known for their speed and strength, and being the crown prince, I had it all.

"Bitch." I heard in the distance. A loud thud followed the words, just as I entered the clearing.

My eyes trailed around the forest floor, before I spotted her. Blood trailed from Addie's forehead, and before I could change the focus of my attention back to the man who did this, he disappeared. My eyes clouded with rage as I hauled her petite, fragile, and light body in my hands in a bridal position.

Her body was sickeningly cold.

I ran back to the castle, wanting to get Addie medical attention. I slammed the doors open for the ball room. All attention switched to me, then the limp body of Addie in my hands. Guests who have been waiting to see me and meet my mate were looking at us confused. I walked across the ballroom before placing her down on a couch. This ball was meant for me to introduce her to my kingdom, and I screwed it up. She wasn't supposed to see me with Vern. Vern was supposed to be out of town. She wasn't even allowed to come near me.

"I need a doctor now." I snarled.

People rushed around, and eventually, a doctor came through with a whole bunch of materials.

Flashback
I finished tying the coral-pink tie, which matched Addie's dress, around my collar.

I exited the bathroom.

Vern.

She was wearing a skimpy red dress, revealing most of her large breasts.

"Vern, what the hell?" I asked.

"Baby, I just wanted to see how you're doing. You're gonna leave her for me, right? You told me you love me." She questioned, slowly getting off the bed. She made her way up to me, and traced her hand along my chest.

"I have more to offer." She shoved her cleavage into my face.

"Get out of here. I don't want to see your face ever again" I snarled.

Vern pulled at my tie and forced my head down, crashing her lips against mine.

"O-Oh." I heard a soft voice that was all too familiar.

Shit.

"I love you, baby." Vern said, kissing my neck.

Vern, that bitch. She did it on purpose.

The door shut close, and I could hear her gentle footsteps padding against the ground as she ran.

I shoved Vern's body off me. I stormed out of the room, trying to stop Addie, but it was too late she was gone.

He cleaned the wound on her head, and bandaged her up. After checking for any other conditions, he stood up and left. She lost a lot of blood from her head when she hit it. There was a nasty bruise, and the doctor had to give her stitches.

Her pale face stuck out against the black bed sheets, and dark circles rimmed her eyes. How could I let this happen to her? I always end up hurting her.

"What happened?"

I turned to the entrance to see Eli standing there with a box of chocolates and Addie's teddy bear. The one she called "Mr. Sparkles." He walked up, next to the bed and placed the teddy bear next to her, and set the box of chocolates on the night stand next to the bed.

I cleared my throat and snarled. "Vern snuck into my room. She's in the cells."

"What the hell? Get rid of her soon. She's caused enough trouble." Eli said looking at me with a scowl. I stared straight ahead at the wall in front of me. Eli knew Vern's capabilities. She was a witch anyways. I wasn't the only one fooled by her.

Eli looked back at my sleeping mate.

"Do you know how much she thinks about you? This whole week, you've been avoiding her. Look at her, Gabriel. She doesn't know anything, but kindness, and she doesn't have anyone, but you, her mate. She wants you."

My eyes darkened at him dangerously. He nodded, understanding that he was in no position to talk to me like that and he left the room. I also knew he was telling the truth.

She wasn't going to wake up for a few days, according to the doctor. She hit her head pretty hard, and she needed to time to heal. I had almost forgotten she didn't have healing powers like us.

"Your highness, may I speak with you?" The head of the guards asked from outside the door. I nodded before proceeding after him.

We stepped into my office, and took a seat.

"We found some information on the attacks," he hesitated. "and your mate."

"Continue."

"Last night, she was attacked by Cyrus Hall in the woods, and a few nights ago, before you imprisoned her, someone was there, but not physically. We weren't able to pinpoint who it was, but it is certainly not Damien. As for your mate, there has to be a reason why people are targeting her. We think we found something. After analyzing her blood, we found something important. It relates to who her mother is."

The guards next words shocked me, leaving me in disbelief.
