Adeline's POV

"Lady Prior wants to see you."

Ha ha ha. The queen wants to see me? The only motive she probably had was to torture me.

She despised me deeply and I was sure she was out to get me.

"Lady Prior wants to see me?" I asked again, stressing on "me."

The servant who was standing in the middle of the room nodded.

Last night after Gabriel found out I was pregnant, he seemed in shock at first, and then he got up and left the room.

He was mad at me.

I should have just told him right away.

Honestly, I don't think even I came face to face with the fact that I was pregnant, and I don't think I want to any time soon. I was overwhelmed, and I tried my hardest to ignore this. But, I knew I had to face it sooner or later.

My eyes were still wide with shock as I stared at the servant. This probably wasn't going to end well. Lady Prior, as she is presently called, wanted to have a peaceful chat over tea with me in the palace courtyards. She has never had any positive emotions towards me, nor do I think she ever will. All, she cared about was destroying me. She didn't want Gabriel to make me Queen, and she even made sure the council felt the same. She set Vern up to distract Gabriel in the first place! This woman hates me!

I nodded at the servant, swallowing to hide my shock.

"Tell her I'll be there shortly." I said.

The servant nodded, leaving the room.

I sighed, getting up from the desk. I was currently sorting through a stack of papers I found in the secret room. We were looking for any clues that may help us. So far, my efforts have been pointless. Most of the letters and documents were about useless political affairs.

I made my way to my closet, to get dressed. I need to look presentable. I can't have the former Queen, Lady Prior, hate me any more than she already does. With the situation we are currently in, she will only increase the gravity of the problem.

I grabbed a flowy, white dress from the rack, deciding to wear it. It was comfortable, yet presentable. I slipped on a pair of flats and escaped the room.

When I approached the courtyard, Lady Prior was already seated amidst the flowers, carefully sipping from her tea, with perfect posture, like any other lady of her title. She looked professional.

As I approached the table, a servant pulled out the chair for me.

Once I was seated, Lady Prior spoke to the servant, "Thank you, Gretel, you may leave now."

The servant immediately left, leaving Lady Prior and I to the serenity of the nature around us. These were the same flowers I first wandered off into, coming across Gabriel.

Lady Prior poured me a cup of tea. I took the cup of tea into my hand, politely. I may have lived in a cottage my whole life, but I was taught manners, posture, and all the other "lady-like" qualities.

"You know you may have a title of your own now, as Queen, but I want you to know that I still hold the same amount of power." Lady Prior spoke.

"You wanted to talk?" I asked, trying to cut straight to the point.

"I wanted to speak to you." She paused.

I nodded, looking at her expectantly.

"About your pregnancy."

My eyes widened.

"Vern told you?" I asked.

Lady Prior nodded.

"The child in your womb, is not only a child. It is the future heir. It's your responsibility to take care of yourself and make sure no harm comes to you are the baby. I am increasing the guards around you. You are now one of my priorities."

I nervously stared at my fingers, which were fiddling with my dress. Here it comes. The dreaded moment where I had to face reality.

"Everyone knows you are an angel, but your child may be the key to securing your throne. I'll visit daily to check up on you.

"I don't care about the throne. I just care about the safety of my child."

"Honey? Are you all right? You're crying."

"Yeah. I guess the weight of it hasn't hit me yet." I said, rubbing the tears off my cheeks.

I got up to leave, but my plans were cut short when we both heard a bullet whiz by just inches in front of me. Exactly where I was sitting a moment ago.

"Duck!" Lady Prior yelled pulling me to the safety of the bush we were hiding behind.

I could hear the sounds of more bullets whizzing by.

"Guards!" Lady Prior yelled.

My heart was beating extremely fast as I wrapped my arms around my stomach. My baby.
