For those of you who can't remember, there's a recap two chapters back.
Adeline's POV
All the pain that has been pulsating through my body for the past few hours had stopped. I took a couple of deep breaths trying to recompose myself, but I failed at the action. I was full on terrified. What just happened? Was Lady Prior okay? There were so many questions running through my head.
I glanced at Vern who was sitting on the ground with her eyes closed, breathing heavily. She opened her eyes to look at me in my horrified state. I couldn't help but panic.
Vern quickly pushed herself off the ground and made her way towards me. She looked to see if I was still bleeding and let out a relieved sigh.
She put her arms on my shoulders, trying to get me to focus on what she was saying.
"Look, Adeline, your children are okay. Both of them will make it."
That still didn't help with my panic.
"W-What happened to Lady Prior?" I asked.
Eli kneeled, lifting the Old Queen into his arms and leaving the room.
"Adeline, look at me. Take a deep breath; you're okay. Let's get you cleaned up first," Vern said, resting her hand on my back.
I looked at Vern, nodding my head and slowing my breathing. She helped me off the bed and towards the bathroom. She helped me strip off my clothes, which were coated in blood, and helped me into the shower.
"I'm going to go get some clothes and a towel, okay?" Vern asked.
I nodded, and she left the bathroom.
Twisting the shower handle, I turned the water to an icy cold.
As the water hit my skin, I could see the pinkish tinge of the tainted water trailing from my body as the blood was being washed away. What has happened to me?
I began to cry. The blood was just a reminder of all the madness I've been through. So much evil existed in this world.
If only Gabriel were here. I needed him. It was my fault he died. I was stupid to run out and ask them to cut off my wings. Of course, Gabriel would try to stop them.
I slammed my hands against the tiled shower walls out of frustration as tears continued to heavily flow out of my eyes. It was all my fault.
My breath hitched as I gasped in pain. The pain was back. Removing my hands from the tiled walls and wrapping them around my stomach, I slid down the wall.
The water droplets splashed of my belly, cooling my body down. Breathing heavily, I tried to contain my pain. What if Vern was wrong? What if whatever spell she ran didn't work?
The pain continued to grow.
"Vern!" I gasped around helplessly, but my voice was just above a mere whisper.
I don't want to lose them.
"Vern!" I said my voice louder this time.
"Adeline?" Vern said entering the room with a towel and a nightgown.
Seeing me curled up on the shower floor in pain, Vern quickly set aside the towel and clothes and rushed to my side.
"Oh, Adeline what happened?" She asked, reaching to turn off the shower.
"Why is the water so cold?" Vern asked.
"It numbs the pain." I whispered. There was another wave of pain in my belly, making me gasp.
"Adeline, you have to tell me what's going on."
"The pain, i-its back. I don't think it worked," I said, turning my head to see the concerned expression on Vern's face.
Taking a deep breath, Vern placed her hand on my stomach; a warm red glow came from her hand. She removed her hand quickly from my stomach, as if something had bit her, and looked at me.
"Adeline, those are contractions," Vern whispered.
Momentarily the pain subsided. I took in a couple of deep breaths in relief.
"The pain is gone-" My scream interrupted my sentence, "Never mind," I muttered as I twisted my body in pain.
I held onto Vern's shoulder tightly.
"Dammit." Vern said, taking the towel she brought to dry me off.
"The magic might've messed with you. Contractions aren't meant to be that far apart. The magic is speeding up the process."
"What does that mean?" I muttered through the pain.
"It means, the twins are coming faster than you've expected." Vern said.
I wasn't sure how to react. Tears ran down my cheeks from both the pain and the fact that I was going to give birth alone. I needed Gabriel.
But, I couldn't bring him back.
"No, I can't do it alone." I wrapped my arms around my stomach as the pain I was feeling increased exponentially. I shut my eyes in pain, tuning out my surroundings.
Another wave of pain hit me. Someone lifted me off the shower floors. Vern slipped the night gown over me. The next thing I knew, I was on a bed.
"Gabriel," I whispered with my eyes shut. I needed him.
The pain was overwhelming.
"Gabriel."
I opened my eyes.
The person who carried me.
"Gabriel."
•Hey guys. Another cliffhanger for you all. The story is almost done! I think it will only be five more chapters until I wrap it up.
I want to thank you all for being super patient with me. I know my updating schedule is horrible, but with the work load I get, I can't do much about it. The only reason I could update today was because it was a snow day!!!!
Who else has snow?
Any idea where the story is heading?
Thanks so much for sticking with me until this point even though I'm a horrible author lmao.
