Different (The Maze Runner)

Chapter 8

-Time Skip to Arrival of Next Greenie-

I wake up late, since the new greenie is supposed to come today I don't have to be up at dawn. The Builders finished my hut last week, so I just set up my hammock in here. I go outside and see that the sun is high in the sky. I go to the Homestead, but no one's there. So I just steal some food from the refrigerator and take it back to my hut. I take a minute to devour the food, then I just sit in there in my hammock for a few minutes. Until a very loud alarm starts going off. It kills my ears, but I get up and run outside. I see everyone crowding around the Box, so I run over to it too and push my way to the front of the crowd.

A few minutes later the alarm stops blaring and Alby opens up the box.

There's a small, chubby kid inside with curly brown hair. He can't be more than twelve or thirteen years old. He looks up at all of us in fear.

Alby goes to jump into the Box, but I stop him. "I'll take care of this." I jump down into the Box and kneel down next to the kid. "Hey, don't be scared. No one here's gonna hurt you. Alright? Do you remember anything about yourself? Who you are, even what your name is?"

He shakes his head. "I-I don't remember a-anything."

I calmly say "don't be scared. Alright? Don't freak out. We're not gonna hurt you." This kid actually looks semi-familiar to me. "Will you let me help you out of here?"

He slowly nods. I suddenly smell a horrible stench, and it smells like it's coming from him.

I quietly say "you crapped, didn't you?"

He looks down at the ground and nods.

"Alright, I'll see what I can do to get you a change of pants. But for now we've gotta get you outta here."

He nods and looks up at me for the first time. I see he has big, brown eyes that are full of fear.

"We're not gonna hurt you. I promise." I look up and ask "can we get some help?"

Someone throws down one end of a rope. I help the greenie stand up, then I grab one end of the rope, and someone pulls the two of us out.

The greenie looks around with fear in his eyes. "W-where are we?"

I say "save your questions for tomorrow, when Alby gives you the Tour."

"W-who're you?"

"My name's Coyote."

He looks a little confused. "Coyote? That's a name?"

I shrug. "It's all I can remember, so it's what I go by. You'll go by greenie until your name comes back."

He just nods a little and looks down at the ground.

"Don't be scared, greenie. We've all been in your position. I was in the exact same position one month ago. But I quickly learned that everyone here is pretty nice, and that there's nothing to be afraid of in here."

He looks up at me and quietly says "I did it again."

I sigh and say "wait here." I go over to Alby and quietly tell him "the greenie needs new pants."

Alby chuckles and nods. He walks off towards the homestead and I go back to the greenie. "Alby's on it."

The greenie says "thanks."

"So you don't remember a name?"

He looks up at me and quietly says "Chuck..."

I say "Chuck?"

He nods. "I-I'm Chuck."

I say "well hi Chuck, I'm Coyote. You want some food?"

He nods eagerly. "Yeah."

I smile a little and bring him to the homestead. I've already taken a liking to this kid and he's been here five minutes. We walk into the kitchen, and Frypan says "hey Coyote. Help yourself to the fridge."

I smile at him and open the fridge. I take out a sandwich, an apple, and a bottle of water. I hand the food to Chuck and say "thanks Fry."

Chuck and I sit down, and he asks "is that your boyfriend or something?"

"Frypan? No, no, god no. I'm dating someone else. God no, not Frypan."

"Does he like you or something?"

"I'm the only girl in the Glade, more than half the guys have asked me out."

He laughs a little and says "the only one?"

I nod and say "yeah, no others before me. One of a kind."

He takes a bite of his sandwich and says "it's strange, your appearance looks... familiar to me."

I shrug and say "you look a little familiar to me too, but I don't know where from."

"Maybe we knew each other or something."

I shrug. "Don't know, probably never will."

We sit in silence as he eats his food, and after a few minutes Alby comes in and hands Chuck a pair of pants. He then hands me a small box. "Says Coyote on it."

I look at the box for a moment, then slowly begin to open it. Inside is just a mirror. "It's just a small mirror."

Chuck says "did you need a mirror or something?"

I shake my head. "Didn't ask for one."

Alby says "just put it in your hut or something then."

"I'll be right back, Chuck."

"Actually, can you give me some time with the greenie?"

I nod. "Yeah, sure." I take the small mirror and go to my hut. I put the box down next to a small flashlight I keep next to my bed. I lay down in my hammock, until I hear a knock on my door. "Come in!"

The door opens and Newt walks in. "Love, Alby says you can't sit around all day. Come help in the gardens."

I sigh. "I get one day off."

"No one gets a true day off in the Glade, love. C'mon, we'll give ya some easy work."

I sigh and get up. I follow him to the gardens and work in there with him for the rest of the day, until the sun goes down. We then go to the homestead and eat as the walls close. After dinner I go right to my hut and collapse into my hammock. I close my eyes and fall asleep after only minutes.

**A/N hey guys. Sorry I haven't updated a lot lately, I haven't been able to write because my laptop died, but I've got a new charger! And I also wanted to finish the book I was writing because I was close to done. I finished it yesterday. Maybe go read my Super Nova books? There's 4 of them, and a lot of people love it. Just trying to give ideas about reading. If you want more details before reading feel free to message me. You don't need to read it. Whatever, forget I asked. Unless you wanna read it. Back to this author's note. Since I finished the book I was writing, this story will probably become my main focus within writing for a while. Please keep in mind that I'm a freshman in high school with 4 honors classes. I get a lot of homework. I won't be able to write so much during the week, but I'll try. Not to mention I might have to start doing family therapy or start staying after with my guidance counselor because of some issues that I talk about in my book Why Me? so that might take some more of my time. But I'll definitely still try to update every day. I probably will, but if I don't this is just a heads-up. Okay, two more things. And finally, in the next chapter some big stuff is gonna happen, I'm actually gonna upload it now, so just be prepared for maybe a small shock (possibly).
