Chapter 32

The following day, Thomas comes to work in the Gardens for the day.

"Anyone tried climbing to the top?" he asks.

"Tried that," Newt answers. "The ivy doesn't go all the way to the top."

'Well what about the Box? Next time it comes up-"

"Tried it already. The Box won't go down with someone in it."

"Well what about-"

"We've already tried it. Twice. Alright? Anything you can think of, we've already tried."

He sighs.

"We'll get out eventually," I say. "Gotta be optimistic."

He gives a slight nod.

Newt picks up a bucket and says "if you wanna be helpful you can go get some fertilizer." He hands the bucket to Thomas.

Thomas takes the bucket and walks into the Deadheads.

Newt walks over to me and says "after work today, I wanna spend some time with you."

I nod. "Alright."

Alyssa, Teresa's voice rings through my head. WICKED is good.

I shake my head. It's not good.

"Why are you shaking your head?" Newt asks.

I sigh. "I don't know anymore." I continue working, until a few minutes later when Thomas comes running out of the woods screaming.

"HELP! HELP ME!" He runs out of the Deadheads followed by Ben, who tackles him to the ground.
"HELP!"

Everyone runs over and I help to tear Ben away from Thomas.

"Lift his shirt," Alby instructs.

Gally lifts p Ben's shirt to reveal a nasty Griever sting.

I turn away and say "god, that's gross."

"IT WAS THE BOTH OF THEM! I'M TELLING YOU! THEY DID THIS!"

I turn to look at him, and he tries to jump up at me. "YOU DID THIS! YOU DID THIS TO US!"

How'd he figure that out...?

"THE TWO OF YOU! YOU DID THIS!"

Newt smacks him on the head with a shovel, and he falls to the ground.

"Take him to the Medjacks," Alby orders.

Several people manage to carry a kicking and screaming Ben to the medjacks.

Newt walks up to me and says "what's he talking about?"

I shrug. "Don't know."

"I know you remembered things. He remembered things too. So he'd know. And he said you did something. He said you did this. What is this?"

I sigh. "I-I don't know."

"Fine. Get back to work."

I return to what I was doing, and throughout the day I catch Newt zoned out, not working. Deep in thought. Probably trying to figure out what Ben's accusing me of.
