Chapter 19

I see one of the people I remembered. The girl.

She says "we need to find the cure, Alyssa. We're all going in there. All six of us."

I sigh. "I-I just wish there was another way."

She shakes her head. "The Maze is the only way. We've gotta look for the Killzone patterns."

"I can't believe he's okay with this."

"Maybe they didn't tell him everything."

I sigh. "Should I be the one to tell him, or should we let Chancellor Paige take care of it?"

She shrugs. "Do what you think is right. But you've gotta do it. Once Chancellor Paige decides, there's no going back. She chose you."

I sigh and say "I'm gonna have to tell him. He'll see."

"Want me to go with you?"

I shake my head. "No, this is something I should tell him in private. Just me and him."

She sighs and says "I really wish this didn't have to happen."

I say "but you're right though, we need a cure. If the six of us need to go into the Mazes to find it, so be it."

"Maybe none of us will die."

"You don't know that."

"We could get lucky. Maybe all six of us will live through the Trials."

"That's highly unlikely. There's no way Thomas, Aris, Chuck, Rachel, you, and I are all gonna survive that. Someone's gonna have to die."

"You never know. A7 is looking like he'll have a good chance of surviving, so why can't we? Besides, we know the way. We'll figure it out."

"Yeah, well I'll have to wait for you and Thomas."

"We'll be right behind you. Right after Chuck."

I nod and say "I'll wait. Now, I should probably go talk to Aris."

She nods and says "if you need to talk afterwards, you know where to find me."

I nod again and stand up.

I see me talking with a boy that has dark hair and olive skin.

"What do you mean you've gotta save him?"

I sigh and say "I've gotta go into the Maze and somehow convince him to stay."

"How does Chancellor Paige expect you to do that?"

I look down at the ground and quietly say "by making him fall in love with me."

"Why does it even matter if this one survives or not?! A lot of them have died already!"

"Aris I don't want anyone else to die! Alright?! I accepted because I don't want to watch anyone else die!"

"Or maybe you accepted because you've always liked him. You always take special interest in him, you always ask to monitor his Killzone!"

"I do those things because I pity him! He's stuck in that Maze thinking about killing himself! I'm not in love with him I pity him!"

He shakes his head. "You sure about that?"

"Yes, I am. I don't love subject A5 I love you. And only you. I promise."

"In less than a month you won't even remember me."

"But I'll see you again. After the Maze. Before the Scorch. I'll break things off with A5 since he won't be able to kill himself, I'll remember you. I'll find a way."
