I slowly open my eyes to see Chuck getting out of his hammock. "Hey," I say in a tired voice.

"Hi." He turns to me.

I can smell something weird. It smells like... anxiety. And fear.

"He stopped by, didn't he?" I ask.

"How could you tell?"

"I can smell it."

He sighs. "He came last night."

"You told him I don't wanna talk to him, right?"

He nods. "Yep."

"Thanks Chuckie."

He gives a slight nod. "Alright, I'm going for breakfast."

"I'm gonna go with you." I stand up, stretching out my arms.

He and I go to the Homestead, get our breakfast, and sit at one of the tables.

Newt almost immediately runs up to me. "Alyssa I'm so sorry-"

"She doesn't. Want. To. Talk. To. You." Chuck says, making each word perfectly clear.

"But I thought it over and-"

"And what? You're just gonna say what I said? You're just gonna take my words after hurting her with your own?"

"Chuck, I realized you're right. It doesn't matter who she was then. It only matters who she is now."

I look at Chuck. "You said that?"

Chuck nods. "It's true. Even if you were one of them, you're not anymore."

"Love I'm so sorry," Newt reaches for my hand, but Chuck slaps his arm.

"Let the girl speak."

He turns to look at me.

I take a deep breath. "Newt... what you said, it really hurt. A lot. More than I want it to." Because it's true. "I trusted you with my heart and as soon as something comes around you're suddenly against me, convinced I had a part in it. I love you and you know I do, but I think we need to take a break." I leave my food behind, getting up and heading off to the Gardens for work.
