Chapter Six
Professor Dumbledore send all the Gryffindors back to the Great Hall, where they were joined ten minutes later by the students from the other houses, who all looked extremely confused.
“The teachers and I need to conduct a thorough search of the castle,” Professor Dumbledore told them as Professor McGonagall and Flitwick closed all the doors into the hall. “I’m afraid, for your own safety, you will have to spend the night here. I want the prefects to stand guard over the entrabces to the hall and I am leaving the Head Boy and Girl in charge. Any disturbance should be reported to me immediately,” he added to Percy Weasely who was Head Boy “Send word with one of the ghosts.”
Professor Dumbledore paused, about to leave the hall and said,
“Oh, yes, you’ll be needing…”
one causal wave of his wand and the long tables flew to the edges of the hall and stood themselves against the walls; another wave, and the floor was covered with hundreds of squashy purple sleeping bags.
“Sleep well.” Said Dumbledore, closing the door behind him.
The hall immediately began to buzz excitedly; the Gryffindors were telling the rest of the school what had just happened. Harriet just ignored all the buzz and tried finding a sleeping bag,
“Aww, was little baby Evans frightened?” came a mocking voice, Harriet looked back and saw Draco Malfoy with his cronies,
“Well duh,” said Harriet rolling her eyes “I just saw your face right?”
Her fellow Gryffindors around her guffawed, especially the Weasely twins.
“Nice one Harriet!” they hollered, Harriet just smirked. Hermione who was near her along with Harry and Ron (who were laughing themselves) rolled her eyes “She’ll only get more points docked” she mumbled,
“Everyone into their sleeping bags!” Percy hollered “Lights out in ten minutes!”
Harriet and Malfoy exchanged one last glared at each other and headed to find their own sleeping bags together with their fellow house mates.
“Hey Harriet! Come with us!” Harriet turned around and saw Ron Weasely together with Harry who was smiling pleasantly and Hermione, who well didn’t look very happy.
“Nah, I think my presence isn’t wanted.” She said
“Non sense!” said Ron “C’mon,” he then grabbed Harriet’s wrist, Hermione glared at him
“I think she just made herself perfectly clear Ronald,” Said Hermione in her usual snobby voice “Right Harry?” she then turned to Harry for back up, Harry just stared at her awkwardly and back to Harriet who was just wanting to get some sleep.
“Er… It’s cool with me… I mean Harriet’s fun to be around with…” he said “C’mon Harriet.”
“See.” Said Ron “Majority wins, c’mon Harriet.”
The four of them then seized four sleeping bags and dragged them into a corner.
“Uh, I really don’t mind being alone you know…” said Harriet as they got into their sleeping bags, which were very comfy “I don’t want to be you know… Interfering with anything private between you three…”
“Nah it’s cool with us,” said Ron as he put his hands behind his head “Anyone who hates Malfoy like we do is cool.”
Harriet laughed, so did Harry. Hermione just did her best to not glare at them.
“So how long have you guys been friends?” asked Harriet, as she yawned pulling off her high pony tail which made her long dark red hair fall on her shoulders, Hermione glared at her even more mainly because she knew her hair could never fall perfectly like that.
“Ever since First Year,” said Harry, Harriet smiled
“That’s nice,” she said, she found it easy talking to Harry nowadays, he still gawked at her at times and acted quite weird, but she got used to it
They continued talking for a few minutes, and that was when Ron and Harry exchanged a look
“Uh Harriet…” said Ron
“Yeah?” asked Harriet, yawning again “Er – Uh – Why do –“
“Lights out!” Percy shouted “No more talking!”
Ron then dropped the question and the four of them pretended to be asleep. Harriet put Ron’s question in the back of her mind, and tried to relax. She, like all the other people was tensed up. What if it was Sirius Black who broke into the castle?
“Do you think Black’s still in the castle?” Harriet heard Hermione whisper anxiously after a few minutes.
“Dumbledore thinks he might be,” Ron replied
“It’s very lucky he picked tonight, you know,” said Hermione “the night we weren’t in the tower.”
“I reckon he’s lost track of time, being on the run,” said Ron “Didn’t realize it was Halloween. Otherwise he’d have come bursting in here.”
Everyone around them including the four of them themselves were asking the same question: How did he get in. Many people were already making guesses, such as Apparating or even flying in.
“Honestly, am I the only person who’s ever bothered to read Hogwarts, A History?” said Hermione crossly
“I’ve read it,” said Harriet speaking for the first time, Hermione, Harry and Ron then turned to Harriet who they thought was asleep; Hermione for the first time was actually numbered. Ron thought it was actually the apocalypse “It says the castle is protected by more than walls. You can’t just fly in, Apparate or enter by stealth.”
“I reckon Polyjuice Potion is really good though,” said Ron “we’ve tried some last year.”
Harriet smirked
“I’d like to see a disguise that could fool those dementors. They’re guarding every single entrance to the grounds. And Filch knows all the secret passages; they’ll have them covered….”
For the first time in Hermione’s life, someone was actually smarter or as equally smart at her. She gaped at Harriet. Harry and Ron on the other hand didn’t know how to react at Hermione’s expression.
“For the last time! Lights out!” Percy bellowed “No more talking! Get to sleep!”
