Chapter Twenty Eight

Everything was dark, she was falling and she knew no one was going to catch her. She knew she shouldn’t try screaming for help because no one was going to both anyways; and then suddenly there was a small light, it grew larger and larger as it did she heard a voice,

“Harriet… Harriet…”

Harriet slowly opened her eyes. She looked around and saw that she was in the Hospital Wing; she was lying in one of the cots. How long she had been there, she didn’t know. She looked up at her older brother who still looked quite tired

“What happened?” she asked; Harry sighed. He glanced at Hermione, who didn’t look any better than him and back at Harriet,

“They’ve captured Sirius,” Harry said grimly “Any minute by the Dementors are going to perform the kiss.” Harriet knew what the Kiss was; she didn’t need him to explain. She started sitting up

“What?” she said “They – they can’t! We have to do something! He’s innocent!”

“We know,” Harry said

“But we don’t know what to do.” Hermione added, they all stared at each other for a couple of moments, Ron who was lying on the next cot did the same. Harriet was staring at the door, trying to think of something when it suddenly opened, revealing the figure of the Headmaster.

“Headmaster!” Hermione cried, as Dumbledore approached them “You’ve got to stop them! They’ve got the wrong man!”

“It’s true, sir.” Harry said, backing her up. Harriet had now started to get off her cot “Sirius is innocent –“

“It’s Scabbers who did it!”

“Yeah,” Harriet agreed as she stood next to Harry and Hermione, she held onto Harry’s arm for support “We were there; we know the whole story now. It was Scabbers!”

“Scabbers…?” Dumbledore said

“My rat, sir.” Ron explained “Only he’s not really – Well, he was a rat. You see, he used to be my brother Percy’s –“

“The point is,” Hermione cut in “We know the truth. Please, sir, you must believe us.” Hermione pleaded; she still looked weak because of the large gash on her shoulder which was now healing.

“I do, Miss Granger.” Dumbledore said calmly “But I’m sorry to say the word of four thirteen-year-old wizards will convince a few others. A child’s voice, however honest and true, is meaningless to those who have forgotten to listen.”

Dumbledore then looked out the window

“Ah… A shooting star.” He said “If ever one was to make a wish, now would be the time. But time, I’m afraid, is precisely our problem…” He then looked back at the four of them just as the midnight bell began to chime.

“Mysterious thing, time” Dumbledore said “Powerful. And, when meddled with… dangerous…” he sighed and stared at them intently “Sirius Black is in the topmost cell of the Dark Tower,” he then turned to Hermione “You know the laws, Miss Granger.” Hermione nodded; cringing a bit because of the pain in her arm, Dumbledore sighed

“But, I wouldn’t want you to risk your life.” He said, Hermione was going to try to argue but even she had to admit whatever Dumbledore was going to ask her to do would be very dangerous for her.

“But Professor,” Hermione started “I know someone else who does.” She then turned to Harriet who looked as confused as ever, Dumbledore then smiled; his blue eyes twinkling as he turned to her too
