Chapter Twenty Seven

“Remus, old friend… did you take your potion tonight?” Black asked; Uncle Remus, twitching, shook his head; Harriet knew this wasn’t going to go so well, she wanted to run towards Uncle Remus and help him but she didn’t know how “Run. All of you. Now.” Black ordered; but none of them did, they were transfixed onto their places and watched as hair started growing on Uncle Remus’s skin

As the werewolf reared, snapping its long jaws, Sirius disappeared from Harry and Harriet’s side. She wanted to run after him and help but Harry pulled her back just as Sirius transformed. The bearlike dog that was Sirius bounded forward. As the werewolf wrenched itself free of the manacle binding it, the dog seized it about the neck and pulled it backward, away from Ron and Pettigrew. They were locked, jaw to jaw, claws ripping each other.

Harry was too busy holding Harriet, and trying to stop her from running towards the battle in front of them. It was Hermione’s scream that alerted them and made even Harriet stop fidgeting –

Pettigrew had dived for Uncle Remus’ dropped wand. Ron, unsteady with his broken leg, fell. There was a bang, a burst of light – and Ron lay motionless on the ground. Another bang – Crookshanks flew into the air and back to the earth in a heap.

“Expelliarmus!” Harry yelled, pointing his own wand at Pettigrew; Uncle Remus’ wand flew high into the air and out of sight, “Stay where you are!” Harry shouted, running forward. But it was too late. Pettigrew had transformed. He flew into the air and ran out of sight. Harriet cursed

“GET BACK HERE YOU COWARD!” She yelled; trying to get off of Harry’s grip once again “Get back here –“

A howl and a rumbling growl cut Harriet off; Harriet and Harry turned to see the werewolf taking flight; it was galloping into the forest – The dog on the other hand was in pain, there were gashes across his muzzle and back.

“Sirius!” Harry and Harriet both cried; they were about to run towards the injured dog but somebody pulled them both back

“Out of the way!” Snape said; pulling both siblings out of the picture as the werewolf came back into view, the dog leaped back onto his feet despite its wounds; he intercepted the wolf in midair and hit the ground in a fierce tangle of flashing teeth, again and again the dog pushed the werewolf back, but the werewolf was too strong.

“Sirius!” Harry yelled; Sirius yelped and roared in pain as the werewolf flung him into the tall grass. Harry pushed past Snape and dashed into the night; “Harry!” Harriet shouted after him as she ran, Snape tried pulling her back but it was too late, she followed her brother into the dark forest.

“Harry!” Harriet cried as she finally caught up with her brother; Harry grabbed her by the arm before she passed out on the ground, together they walked together and followed the whines of an injured dog somewhere far off.

They weren’t too far where they caught up with each other when they saw the werewolf again. The werewolf had his razor sharp claws suspended over the dog’s neck

“No!” Harry cried; “Please, Professor stop…” Harry pleaded the werewolf then turned his attention to both of them. Harriet felt herself cringe, but she reminded herself that this was Uncle Remus, not some kind of monster; she took a deep breath

“It’s me Uncle Remus,” she said “It’s me, Harriet. Lily, if you may. Remember?” The werewolf lowered both of his paws down, and stared at Harriet right in the eyes, Harriet smiled

“Yes, yes you remember right?” she said; she tried stepping forward but then Uncle Remus’ face twitched, his werewolf side was trying to take over again; Harry tried pulling her back but the werewolf had already raised his paws, Harriet prepared herself for the blow but then –

A howl pierced through the night. Uncle Remus faltered, he coked his head to the side and turned to look at the other side of the forest; Harry and Harriet both stood still, petrified. The werewolf’s eyes then shifted back to Harriet; Harry instinctively pulled her back, something that angered the werewolf.

The werewolf growled; he moved closer to both siblings, but then a second howled pierced through the night. The werewolf then bounded through the darker part of the forest, vanishing out of sight.

“Uncle Remus…” Harriet said quietly; she watched as the figure of the werewolf disappeared, she wasn’t able to watch long though; Harry had pulled her by the arm again

“We have to go.” Harry said; the two of them then started running, it wasn’t long before they found where Sirius was, he was by Black Lake; now back in human form. Both Harry and Harriet stumbled down next to him.

“Sirius!” Harriet cried; she looked into his glassy eyes “Sirius!” she tried shaking him gently; but it was no use, he was running out of time. She was about to cry for help, but that’s when she felt them. A cold feeling filled her body; both she and Harry looked up and found a hundred Dementors swirling above them.

“No… No!” Harry screamed as he drew out his wand; Harriet did the same. They both helped each other up “Expecto… Patronum!” Harry yelled; nothing but a few wisps of silvery light came out of his wand. Harriet took a deep breath; she had never tried the Patronus Charm in front of a hundred or so Dementors before.

“Expecto Patronum!” She cried; a silvery form of a doe erupted from her wand, it was no use though for it faded away quickly. Harriet cried in frustration, she was trying her best to remember her two best memories, finding out she had a brother and actually having a best friend. But it made no effect; the Dementors were with torturing Harriet of Malfoy’s painful words and even her own father’s last words.

“Hold… on… Harriet…” Harry said; sounding like he couldn’t even hold on any much longer himself “Expecto… Expecto Patronum!”

Despite her weakness, Harriet nodded and raised her wand again

“Expecto –  Expecto patronum!” This time only wisps of silvery light came out. The Dementors were draining Harriet; she could already feel herself growing weak and Harry wasn’t feeling any better. The Dementors closed in on them, they were drawing closer and closer; it didn’t take long before both of them fell onto the ground next to Sirius.

Harriet could feel herself starting to pass out; she knew that just within seconds her eyes would close without her even trying. She felt like all hope was lost, they stood no chance. She turned her head to look at Harry who wasn’t looking any better; she then turned to Sirius who looked like he was already hovering between life and death.

I thought you were my friend Malfoy’s voice ringed in her ears you’re just another filthy little mudblood! He was going to be the last thing she ever heard –

And then, through the fog that was drowning her, she thought she saw a silvery light growing brighter and brighter… The Dementor must have released her. The blinding light was still illuminating the grass around her… Malfoy’s voice cold voice was gone; the cold was ebbing away….

Something was driving the Dementors back…. It was circling around her and Black and Harry…. They were leaving…

The air was warm again…

With all the strength she had left, Harriet raised her head and used her elbow as a stand and there she saw across the lake, an animal amid the light, galloping across the lake’s water… Harriet narrowed her eyes to get a clearer view… It was as bright as a unicorn…. Fighting to stay conscious, Harriet watched the silvery figure as it reached the opposite shore.

For a moment, Harriet saw, by its brightness, somebody welcome it back… raising his hand to pat it… someone who looked strangely familiar… but it couldn’t be… She couldn’t understand. She tried sitting up, but her body was too weak, it didn’t take long before her head hit the ground and she finally fainted.
