[AU where they met for the first time.]
(Lydia POV)
I focused my eyes out the window as I played the next song on my phone. I loved taking bus rides to nowhere on rainy days and just staring out the window. It's so serene. Especially when I have me earbuds in to cancel out all the outside noises. It was just me and my thoughts and I liked it like that. I watched the rain drops roll down my window and pretended they were racing. The bus pulled to the next stop and more people got on. I didn't pay them any attention, but a flash of plaid and brown hair caught my eye as a boy my age raced to get into the bus before it pulled away. The bus driver waited, and the boy got on. I looked up as he made his way down the row, panting and out of breath, and sat in the seat across from mine. Our eyes met and he reddened, then gave me a shy smile. I could feel my cheeks heating up as well. I returned the smile. It wasn't my usual Lydia Martin smile that I would flash at guys to get them to do what I want. It was a genuine smile. He looked away and I turned back to the window. Something was different now. I didn't want it to be just me and my thoughts anymore. I wanted it to be me and him. We sat in silence for about ten minutes.
A new song began and I suddenly felt a sneeze coming. I tried to hold it in.
"At least make it a cute one." I thought to myself.
It was no use. I sneezed so loud that I startled myself. Peoples heads turned. I shrunk down in my seat. Suddenly, I realized something. I had my earbuds in, so I didn't know if anyone said "God bless you." If I say thank you, they'll think I'm weird cause what if no one said anything. But if I don't say thank you, they'll all think I'm rude. I turned off my music and thought this over. It was a stupid and small dilemma, but it mattered to me. I decided to say thank you just in case.
"Thank you." I said out loud.
The boy looked at me.
"Oh sorry."
I raised an eyebrow.
"What?"
"I didn't say God bless you."
My eyes widened.
"You didn't? Did anyone?"
He shook his head.
"No. I thought you knew that so that's why you said thank you. To show them they were rude."
Oh god. My attempt to not be rude made it look like I was rude. He thought I was being sarcastic when I said "thank you". Like when you hold the door for someone and they don't say "thank you" , so you say "you're welcome" anyway to show them they were rude. He must think I'm a rude now.
"Ohhhhhh." I said embarrassedly. It was all I could say. I got up and went to the bathroom at the back of the bus. I didn't want to be there anymore. I had embarrassed myself enough. After I calmed myself down, I was ready to go back. I planned to get off on the next stop, and then pray I never see any of these people again. Unfortunately, that includes the cute boy. Right as I walked out, the bus driver slammed on the brakes and I lost my footing. I launched forward and landed, ironically, right in the lap of the cute boy. He looked surprised at first, then smiled.
"Wow. I guess you really fell for me, huh?"
And that was it. The whole bus broke into applause at this stupidly perfect pick up line. I looked around and then back at him.
"I'm Stiles by the way."
I grinned and held out my hand, still on his lap.
"Lydia."
He shook my hand.
I slid off of him and we talked the whole time. Forget my plan, I'm riding to wherever he's going. After that day, I never rode the bus alone again. He was always with me, and I liked it like that.
