(a/n: they aren't dating)

Lydia and Stiles were waiting outside the school during a fire drill. They were told to wait by the back entrance until the building was cleared. The majority of the students were out on the front lawn. Only a handful of students were waiting by the back. Stiles and Lydia distanced themselves from the crowd and talked until they were allowed back inside.

"I've been thinking." Stiles said out loud.

"Well that's never good." Lydia replied sarcastically. Stiles made a face at her. She smiled in return.

"Oh hush. You'll like what I have to say."

"Go on." She said.

"You know how Scott is the alpha of our pack? Well I think you're the beta." Stiles suggested.

"You think I'm Scotts right hand man?" Lydia asked.

"Definitely. You have the brains and the scream. He has claws and pointy ears. You guys the Shaggy and Scooby of our pack. The dynamic duo, if you will."

"I think I'm more of a Daphne." Lydia laughed.

"Still. You two are this towns greatest leaders. I just thought you should know." Stiles stated. Lydia started at him for a moment.

"You may think that, but you're wrong." Lydia said softly. Stiles just gave her a puzzled look.

"I'm not the right hand man. You are."

Stiles rolled his eyes.

"Yeah right. I'm literally the most useless person in our pack. I'm just there for decoration." He answered. Lydia stuck her hands in her jacket pockets and stepped closer to Stiles.

"That's not true." Lydia said, a little annoyed.

"Isn't it though, Lydia? What have I ever done for the pack? All I do is hit people over the head with baseball bats. I don't mean to sound so mopey, I'm just being honest." Stiles sat on a lunch table looked down at the ground.

"Stiles, look at me." Lydia said. Stiles just kicked the dirt.

Lydia sighed and walked over to where he was perched. She took his chin between her thumb and pointer finger and forced him to looked her in the eyes.

"You're not useless." She said gently.

"But-"

"No buts. We need you Stiles. You're a vital part of this team. If you weren't, would we have risked our lives to save you from the nogitsune?" Lydia asked. Stiles was quiet.

"Or what about me, Stiles? Would I have remembered you, despite everyone in this town forgetting? Would I have fought to make your dad believe he had a son if you were just decoration?" She continued.

Stiles didn't answer.

"The answer is no. We need you." Lydia paused before adding, " I need you."

He gave in.

"Alright. I believe you." Stiles smiled gratefully. Lydia smiled back. A crimson blush surfaced on Stiles's cheeks. Lydia took notice of this.

"Why do you still get so flustered around me?"

"Because I've liked you since the moment I laid eyes on you Lydia. Even in third grade, my heart with go crazy every time you asked to borrow one of my crayons." Stiles replied with a cheeky grin.

"Well, you had the 48 pack. It has all the good colors."

Stiles laughed and looked down.

"You know, sometimes I'll look over at you, and I'll remember how close we are, and it'll blow my mind." Stiles confessed.

"Why?" Lydia laughed. Stiles shrugged and stood up.

"I still haven't processed that we're such good friends. Ones that would die for each other. And every time I look at you and see that you're already looking at me, I forget how to breath. You are my life, my love, my only Lydia. And that's the one thing that won't change. So I'm sorry if I still get flustered. You just have that effect on me. You always have."

Lydia paused. She looked at Stiles, giving him her full attention.

"And you're just so smart I could kiss you." He concluded.

"Do not kiss me." She said.

"N-not gonna-no...MWAH DID IT ANYWAY." Stiles proclaimed as he pecked Lydia on the cheek.

Lydia just stood there, processing what happened. She light touched her cheek with her fingertips.

"What was that?" She finally asked.

"Huh?" Stiles answered.

"You were like a sixth grader playing spin the bottle for the first time. Kiss me like a man damn it." Lydia demanded.

Stiles could barely believe what he was hearing.

"You want me too?" He asked quietly. He gave her time to change her mind.

"Yea." She answered softly.

Stiles froze. He had waited all his life for this moment, but he couldn't bring himself to kiss her.

"I guess you aren't man enough." She taunted. "I should probably go be with the other students."

Stiles saw his chance slowly fading. He wanted to, but he was frozen in place. Lydia nodded.

"Alright. See you later then."

She turned to walk away. Stiles grabbed her arm and spun her into his embrace. This startled Lydia. She was about to say something witty when Stiles planted his mouth on hers. Lydia wrapped her arms around his neck and Stiles held her tighter.

Everyone began to shuffle back into the building. Stiles and Lydia stood in the middle of the sea of students. Neither of them said a word until they were the only ones still outside.

"Do you wanna skip the rest of the day and just hang out at my house?" Stiles suggested.

"Gladly." Lydia smiled.
